Munford Lady Cougar two-sport athlete Sami Jo Schulz made a visit to The University of Memphis yesterday for softball.
After helping her volleyball team win over Brighton tonight in three sets, she shared the news from her trip to Memphis.
“I am verbally committed now and I will be signing in November for softball,” she announced.
Schulz, the 2011 Star Softball Player of the Year and a Best of the Preps finalist, said her reasons for picking the Memphis Lady Tigers were simple.
“It’s close to home and I need my Mama,” she said. “I really like the campus a lot. And Coach (Natalie) Poole really seems like a cool person. I’m excited.”
Poole might be excited getting a prototype lead-off hitter. Schulz has helped guide the Lady Cougars to back-to-back State Tournament.
In the classroom, Schulz has a 3.8 grade-point average and scored a 27 on the ACT. She is also a member of the National Honor Society. Now she will be the first Munford Softball player to sign with a Division I school since Cali Overbeck did it with Ole Miss.
“It feels really good because I’ve always looked up to Cali,” Schulz concluded. “To be anywhere near what she did is a great accomplishment. I’m proud of myself and I really thank my parents a lot.”
