Next week marks the opening for Playhouse 51’s latest play.

Star Staff Reports

Playhouse 51, Millington’s Community Theatre opens its 9 theatrical season with Jerome Lawrence and Robert Erwin Lee’s Inherit the Wind, sponsored by Mike Caruthers, USA Properties and Karen Thompson, Crye-Leike Realtors.  Sean Lester (Brady) and Danny Armitage (Drummond) expertly bring to life the two great lawyers who argue the case for and against a science teacher accused of the crime of teaching evolution.  The storyline is loosely based on a real-life case in 1925 that took place in Dayton, also known as the Scopes Monkey Trial.

Playhouse 51 is thrilled to have guest director, Joe Filippo, bring his talent and theatrical expertise to Millington for this large scale dramatic production. His experience includes over forty years of teaching and administration in higher education, where he has had directed a wide variety of plays, ranging from Shakespeare, to Greek tragedies, to avant garde theatre.  He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Florida in 1972 and engaged in post-doctoral study at Yale University in 1981 through an NEH fellowship.  He has served as the President of the Tennessee Theatre Association, the Southeastern Theatre Conference, and the Montgomery County Historical Society.

“What an invaluable opportunity to bring a professional director to our community and take our learning experience to a new level! The added benefit is that Joe is a great friend that I am thrilled to be working with again after 30 years! This is going to be a wonderful experience for Playhouse 51 and the Millington community,” commented Danny Armitage, Executive Director of Playhouse 51.

Inherit the Wind will be performed at the Millington Civic Center located at 8077 Wilkinsville Road in Millington September 14, 15, 21 & 22 at 7:30 PM and September 16 at 2:00 PM.  Please arrive 15 minutes prior to curtain to ensure proper seating.  Tickets are $12 for regular adult, $10 for senior/student/member/military and available for purchase at the door.   Group rates are also available.  For more information, visit www.playhouse51.com, join us on Facebook, call 901.872.7170.
