Cougars win M&M Bowl, end nine year drought

By Thomas Sellers Jr.

Munford senior running back Turner Weston rejoices seconds after his team beat the Millington Trojans 29-28 Saturday night to end the school’s nine-year losing streak.

Let the party begin in Munford.

After nine streak M&M Bowl defeats, the Munford Cougars finally topple the Trojans winning 29-28 in the Munford Football Stadium.

Senior quarterback found receiver Derek Pierce late in the fourth quarter to make the score 28-27 in favor of the Millington Trojans. Munford Head Coach Matt Saunders decided to go for two points. And Harden found Pierce once again in the back of the end zone for the go-ahead score.

The game started on Friday night with the Cougars jumping ahead 7-0 after an Antonio Moore TD reception. Lightning and severe weather suspended the contest with 10 minutes and 44 seconds remaining in the first half. When play resumed Saturday night, the Trojans faced a second down with 27 yards for a first down on the 6-yard line.

Millington running back Antonio Webber took a pitch from quarterback Allen Moore and raced 94 yards for a touchdown.

Munford regrouped and scored twice with touchdown runs from D’Marious Exum and Harden to take a 21-7 lead into halftime.

Webber stuck again for the Trojans with another long touchdown run of 47 yards in the third quarter. His 19-yard TD scamper tied the game at 21-21.

Then Millington took the lead at 28-21 when LaKeron Garcia caught an 86-yard touchdown pass from Moore with 2 minutes and 35 seconds remaining in the game.

But the Cougars had enough time to mount a drive to win the game and end the Trojans’ winning streak in the series. Before Saturday night the last time Munford won an M&M Bowl was 2002.
