Santorum coming to Millington Oct. 4

By Thomas Sellers Jr.

Former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum will be speaking at the Confidential Care for Women annual dinner Oct. 4.

The doors of the Millington Confidential Care for Women closed in June. But since that day, the organization has been more visible in the community and reaching more clients. That same day, Confidential Care secured their Image Clear Ultrasound Mobile Unit to serve patients. And now the staff based in Covington is getting the word out about their RV through promotions and the upcoming annual fundraising dinner with guest speaker Rick Santorum on Oct. 4 at the Millington First Baptist Church. “We’re real excited to have Rick Santorum,” Confidential Care’s Diana Meinweiser said. “He’s very pro life. He’s a really good speaker and very much a gentleman.” Santorum served as a U.S. Senator representing Pennsylvania for 12 years. He was a 2012 candidate for the Republican Party presidential nomination. Santorum holds socially conservative positions, and is particularly known for his opposition to same-sex marriage and birth control. While serving as a senator, Santorum was the author of the National Weather Service Duties Act of 2005 and the Santorum Amendment. In 2005, Santorum introduced the Workplace Religious Freedom Act along with Senator John Kerry. Meinweiser said Santorum joins a strong tradition of guest speakers who promote the cause and service of Confidential Care. “It’s because he’s pro life and that’s what it’s all about saving the unborn,” she said. “That’s the reason why we’re having him. And we want to promote the Mobile Unit. We’ve seen more than 150 people in the two months with the mobile unit all over Shelby County. “Right now we could use two more Mobile Units,” Meinweiser continued. “We can’t be everywhere we need to be unfortunately. We’re hoping people will come and listen to him and understand the need that there is for these young women who find themselves with unwanted pregnancies.” The Millington Confidential Care closed earlier this summer. But the organization had a plan to continue to serve its cliental. “We didn’t close down until we had the mobile unit in hand and ready,” Meinweiser noted. “We had several of people go to Ohio to train. They drove the Mobile Unit back. Our Mobile Unit serves Shelby County.” The Mobile Unit travels from Memphis to Millington. On Tuesdays it can be found on Navy Road across from the McDonald’s from 10 to 5 p.m. The vehicle is brand new and kept clean. It features a restroom and private area to perform an ultrasound. Along with volunteers, a staff member is always on board. Just like in the Covington office, the Mobile Unit will have a nurse and counselor to answer any questions. Meinweiser the Mobile Unit made Confidential Care more accessible in a short amount of time. “We had one girl from Atoka who wanted us to an ultrasound because she was abortion minded,” she recalled. “But she didn’t want to go to where we were that day. We just drove the Mobile Unit to her. That’s why we like having the Mobile Unit.” That woman was able to get counseling and options like adoption. Women in similar situations learn about adoption, maternity homes and other things related to pregnancy from Confidential Care. Meinweiser said the Mobile Unit and Santorum will help get that word out. The annual dinner is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. with the dinner lasting from 7-9 p.m. Tables are $240 and an individual ticket is $30. For more information, call 476-6528.
