TRA International Homecoming Court

Star Staff Reports

Homecoming Week is always something special at Tipton-Rosemark Academy.  Students, parents and alumni celebrate the week with class competitions, homecoming courts and queens, tailgating, alumni events and football.

“We have worked hard over the past couple of years to improve and increase Homecoming festivities for our students,” said Alex Hooker, Upper School Principal.  “We want our students to have fond memories of Homecoming Week, so they will return as alumni and continue to support our school. We hear from new students, parents and teachers that our Homecoming is like nothing they have seen at other schools.”

This year’s High School Homecoming Court was unique and special in it’s own way.  Tipton-Rosemark Academy currently has three exchange students enrolled this school year.  Janet Chen, a sixteen year old from Taipei, Taiwan, is one of those exchange students and was nominated by her classmates to the junior class court.  “It was a new experience for me because we don’t have Homecoming in our country, said Janet.  “At first I didn’t know what expect, then I was excited to learn that I would get to dress up and have my hair done.  We don’t do that in our country either.”

Janet’s host mother, Kelly Goode said, “When my daughter Courtney, also a junior at TRA, sent me a text and told me Janet was on Homecoming court, my eyes immediately filled with tears.  To me this was so selfless of her classmates, since only two girls out of the entire junior class were chosen.  It shows how the TRA students have embraced her and want her to have the full American high school experience.”  Janet says she feels honored to have been nominated and would like to thank everyone for the experience.

Janet says she was nervous about walking on the football field in heels and tripping since her host dad, Mike Goode is so tall and she is only 4’9.  “He told me to grab his arm and he would pull me up if I tripped!”

“From the first day with us it has felt like Janet belongs in our family,” said Mrs. Goode.  “She has such a sweet spirit that we are truly blessed.  We are so thankful we have been given the opportunity to have Janet with us.”

The members of the 2012 TRA High School Homecoming Court were Taylor Beasley and Brooke Bridges, representing the freshman class; Ashley Smith and Kellie Owen, representing the sophomore class; Janet Chen and Sarah Applebaum, representing the junior class and Bayleigh Nale, Ashleigh Douglas and Queen Audra Bibb, representing the senior class.
