Sales Tax Passes in Millington

Star Staff Reports

MEMPHIS — The referendum authorizing a sales tax in Millington to fund schools has passed Tuesday morning.

The decision was made by Chancellor Arnold Goldin.

Goldin said due to voting issues, a number of residents from Lucy were mistakenly allowed to vote in Millington’s August election.

The original vote showed the referendum failing by only two votes with 1,033 against and 1,031 voting for it.

The decision means all six Shelby County municipalities voted in favor of a one-half cent sales tax to open their own schools in order to break away from the unified system of Memphis and Shelby County schools.
