Calendar of Events Nov. 8

Month of November

Fall Adult Co-ed Recreational Volleyball are underway. Games will be played on Saturdays starting Jan. 12.  There will be a 10 game schedule with a single elimination tournament following completion of the regular season. The season will approximately be over the first weekend of April. All games will be played at the Millington Civic Center Gym. Each team will have 10 players. Rosters will be frozen at the start of the season. You will not be able to add and/or drop players. Three girls and three guys on the court at a time. You can play with more girls than guys but not vice versa.


Send your favorite holiday recipes, and we’ll post them to our Facebook page during the holiday season! Be sure to include your name, category of dish (breakfast, lunch, diner, dessert, snack, drink, etc), the recipe (broken down into ingredients and steps), and a low-resolution photo of the dish if you happen to have one. Millington Arts and Recreation is announcing several new programs this month. Senior Computer Class: Learn the basics of using a computer! If you have not used a computer before, or have difficulty using one, this is the class for you. This is a great way to communicate with your family, especially your precious grandchildren!  Classes will be held on Mondays and Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., and is free of charge. Penmanship:  Don’t let your children miss out on this important skill. Children are no longer being taught how to write in cursive.  Allow your child to learn his/her real penmanship. This class is completely free! For more information, call 873-5770.


Game Time: Have fun and reduce stress levels with a great way to relax and unwind! This is a time to enjoy board games and card games, such as checkers, chess, monopoly, scrabble, pictionary, and more! No electronic games will be allowed. Game time is free and available Mondays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Wednesdays from 4 p.m.-8 p.m., and Fridays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.  For more information, call 873-5770.


Self Defense with John Camacho: Learn how to defend yourself in a compromising situation.  Classes begin Tuesday, November 5.  Schedule isTuesday 6 p.m.-8 p.m., and Saturday noon-2 p.m.There is a fee.  First month is free for everyone. Ballroom Dance Lessons: Join us for proper instruction of the art of ballroom dancing. For more information, call 873-5770.


Bridge: Instruction as to how to learn to play the card game Bridge.  Classes will be held on Wednesdays from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. There is a fee.  For more information, call 873-5770.


Come by the YMCA and mail your Santa letter between Nov. 23-Dec. 15. Santa’s Elf will reply to all letters. Then come and join us on Friday, Dec. 7 for the Annual Craft Fair between 9 a.m. -1 p.m., if you can’t make it on Friday, try Saturday, Dec. 8 from 10 a.m. -1 p.m. While you’re here, bring the children for cookies, pictures and games with Santa. For the athletes, start early and participate in our Santa Swim by swimming 1 mile or try or Mistletoe Mini-triathlon which includes swimming 100 yards; biking (indoor cycle) 6 miles and finishing with a  mile walk/run (treadmill),  the nursery will be available. Nov. 9 

Register for the Co-Ed Dodgeball Tournament, presented by Millington Arts and Recreation and MWR, to be held Saturday, Nov. 17 at North 82 Gym. This tournament is open to ages 14 and up. Rosters must have 6-8 players per team, and teams must have at least three girls on the court at the start of the game.There is a cost. Nov. 10 

The Millington Arts and Recreation Department is hosting a Veterans Day Program and Dessert Reception at Baker Community Center.  The event begins at 11 a.m., and is free to all veterans and their families.  Tickets are available for for non-military who wish to attend the event.  For more information on the event, or to become a dessert sponsor, call 873-5770, or e-mail


Nov. 12

All local veterans are invited to the 2012 Veterans Day Program at Austin Peay Elementary Monday starting at 1 p.m. There will be a guest speaker Luke Weathers III, son of a Tuskegee Airman. There will tribute songs performed by the students and each branch of the service will be recognized. For more information, call 848-3809.

Nov. 13

Mature Adults Ballroom Dance (ages 30 and up) will be held at the Baker Community Center in Millington on Tuesday. Music will be by James Mahannah from the hours  of 7 -10 p.m. There is a fee and bring finger foods. For more information, contact Betty or Everett Clark at 872-3508.


Nov. 15

The National Active & Retired Federal Employees Association, Chapter 1382 meeting will be held at noon, Thursday, at Old Timers Restaurant in Millington. For more information, call Carolyn Cribbis at 413-7123.


Nov. 19

Play Pink: Police and Fire Softball Tournament to benefit Karen Craig will be held Nov. 24 with the tournament starting at 8 a.m. The deadline for teams to signup is Nov. 19 with a fee of $200. Join the fight against breast cancer by signing up for the tournament. The proceeds collected from the tournament will be donated to Craig, a Millington Police Department secretary who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Nov. 24  

Did you know that the Saturday following Thanksgiving is “Small Business Saturday”? The Millington Arts and Recreation Department will host a Holiday Market on Saturday, Nov. 24 at Baker Community Center to encourage shoppers to support local, small businesses.  If you make hand-made Christmas gifts, own a small business, offer private lessons, or anything in between, this event is for you! The Market will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Vendor booths are available on a first come, first served basis for a fee (includes one six-foot table and two chairs).  Because space is limited, only one vendor from specialized businesses (i.e. Mary Kay, 31, Scentsy, etc.) will be admitted in the Market.  Vendor packets are available at Baker Community Center.  For more information, call 873-5770 or e-mail There is no admission for shoppers.
