Teddy Friend


Teddy E. Friend, age 78, passed away on Oct. 23, 2012 after a long battle with various illnesses. He was born February 19, 1934 to the late Oral T. and Gladys Friend of Cove, Arkansas and was one of 12 children. He was united in marriage to the late Emma Jean Liles Friend of Mena, Arkansas in 1954. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oral T. and Gladys Friend of Cove, Arkansas, six brothers; Oral T., Jr., William, Clabe, James, Marvin and Chet Friend, two sisters; June Belknap and Mary Jo Rogers; two grandchildren, Greggory Modglin and Stephanie Wooolbright. Teddy was a member and past commander and secretary of the Mt. Meadow Lodge No. 218, Hatfield, Ark., Member and Past Master of the Richland Lodge No. 748, Rosemark, a member of Alchmia Shrine, a 32 Degree Scottish Rite Past Thrice Illustrious Master Mason of Tenn., a Member of KYCH (Knights of York Court of Honor), Past Commander of Commandary No. 39, Rosemark, Right Worshipfull Master Royal Arch Mason Chapter No. 225, Rosemark, Past Illustrious Master Cryptic Mason Counsel No. 131, Rosemark, A member of the York Rite College No. 131, Rosemark, Member of the Traylee Counsel No. 41, Rosemark, Member of The Scottish Rite Body-Southern Jurisdiction Valley of Ft. Smith, Ark. He was awarded the highest award, The Pillars of Soloman Award at Mt. Meadow Lodge No. 218, Hatfield. He was also a member of the Dallas Lodge No. 128, Mena, Ark., and was a member of the Tennessee Priory, Rosemark. Teddy was a lifetime member and Past Commander of the DAV Ouachita Post No. 46, Lifetime member of the VFW Post 4451, a member of the American Legion Post No. 018 and a member of the Polk County Veteran Honor Guard. Teddy served in the United States Navy for more than 22 years and reached the rank of AFCM-Master Chief of Aircraft Maintenance. He was also an A&P mechanic. He was an accomplished musician and song writer, having produced three CD’s where he wrote lyrics and music to honor his Ouachita Roots. He was a proud member of the Bluegrass, Country and Gospel Communities. His music and voice will be greatly missed. Teddy was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, Christian, and friend. He gave to community and loved his Polk county roots. He is survived by brother, Thomas Friend, two sisters, Reba Hamby and Ruby Tillotson, four children, Teddy Friend, Jr., of Cove, Ark., John E. Friend, of Marion, Ark., Sonja Drewery and Kathryn Modglin, both of Millington, eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. We are at a loss without him in our world Funeral services were held Nov. 3, 2012 at American Legion Hall at Acorn with Brother Roger Genung, Brother Joe May, and Brother Norman Morgan officiating. Interment follows at Pleasant Grove Cemetery at Cove under the direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home. Military honors were rendered by local Veterans organizations of Polk County and the United States Navy. Masonic rites will close the service. Pallbearers were Rusty Gonzales, Jack Peebles, Ray Corder, Ivan Liles, Larry Winfield, and Steve Fortner. Honorary pallbearers were Rex Burns, Ladurl Knight, Eddie Cross, David Spurgin, James Scott, Ted Fritz, Don Martin, and Anthony Lewis.


Gerald E. Hannah, 69, of Millington died Oct. 30, 2012. Mr. Hannah was a U.S. Navy veteran retiring after 20 years of service. He enjoyed collecting model trains and coins. He was preceded in death by his brother Kenny Hannah. Survivors include his wife June Hannah, two daughters Carolyn and Karen; three grandsons Edward, Koby, and Ronald; and three brothers Joe, Ronnie and Richard. A memorial service was held Nov. 5 at Northridge Woodhaven Funeral Home in Millington. 872-3382.


M. Graig Porterfield, 46, electrician, won his battle with cancer and went on to be with his Lord on Oct. 26, 2012 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis. Service was held October 30 at Hartland Baptist Church, in Memphis, where he was a member. he leaves his wife, Becky Porterfield; two sons, Graigory and Chris; parents, Sharon and Richard Frederick; sister, Candace (Greg); brothers, Tony (Tricia), Michael (Leighann), David, Lee (Amy); also a host of nieces and nephews, friends and relatives. Special thanks to our friends on three Crews, Baptist Emergency Room and Five South. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hartland Baptist Church.
