Season ends for Trojans by one point

By Thomas Sellers Jr.

GERMANTOWN — In an instant classic, the Germantown Red Devils advance to the Class 6A Quarterfinals tonight with a 24-23 overtime win over the Millington Trojans.

The hometown Red Devil fans watched their team score on a fourth down and one in the extra period to tie the playoff game at 23-23.

When the extra point traveled straight down the middle of the uprights, Germantown had a date with the unbeaten Whitehaven Tigers for Nov. 16 at Whitehaven.

The Tigers advanced tonight with a 54-0 win over Southwind.

Germantown had to withstand the running attack of Millington to advance.

Trojan seniors Cazzie Foster and Antonio Webber crossed the goal line for Millington throughout the night.

Millington took an early 7-0 lead after Germantown fumbled on the opening play.

But the Red Devils settled down and build a 17-7 halftime lead.

The Trojans (6-6) rallied with a long drive in the third quarter that concluded with a Webber 1-yard TD run with one second left in the period.

Travis Bell tied the game at 17-17 with a 30-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. With both defense holding strong down the stretch the contest went to overtime.

Millington won the toss and took its first possession in for a score when Webber crossed the goal line with his second 1-yard TD.

Millington Trojan senior safety George Odum makes one of his nearly 20 tackles Friday night against Germantown.

Millington senior running back Cazzie Foster picks up a first down on the Trojans long third quarter drive that led to a touchdown.

But the extra point was blocked by the Red Devils making the tally 23-17.

Germantown (9-3) scored on fourth down and nailed the extra point to advance.
