Can for a Tan

By Thomas Sellers Jr.

The staff at TAN-N-GO in Millington will be collecting can food all November for the Food Bank.

For decades TAN-N-GO has offered its namesake of tanning.

And clients who frequent one of the 13 area Memphis locations can tell you a TAN-N-GO is also home to clothing, lotions, jewelry, purses, shoes and scented candles.

The last couple of years the business has added another feature during the month of November with a food drive helping the Memphis Food Bank. And the newest TAN-N-GO at 8510 Wilkinsville Road in Millington is participating.

“You can bring in any can good,” said Amanda Davenport, Salon Manager. “We’re doing this to help out the Memphis Food Bank. This is at all locations. We’re giving benefits like one can you can tan in this bed and if you bring in two cans you can tan in this bed.”

The Millington TAN-N-GO opened it’s doors Oct. 10. It features 12 rooms and a shopping area in the front.

“Everything a girl would want, we offer,” Davenport said. “We offer tanning beds, an anti-aging bed. We have spray-tan booths. We even have the airbrush tan where somebody can place your tan on you.

“You can just bring them (cans) in for the just the actual food drive,” she added. “This is going on for the whole month of November.”

Davenport and the Millington TAN-N-GO staff learned that the Food Bank serves more than 20,000 people a week with more than half being children.

The Can for Tan will help feed those in need and give TAN-N-GO clients a discount on tanning.

“All donations are welcome,” Davenport said. “You can bring in can good to get discounts. This is a good way to help out the community and get your tan.”

TAN-N-GO employees will have a chance to get hands on giving back to the community by working at the Food Bank. In the meanwhile Davenports is hoping the new digs will attract customers and cans.

“We hope we’re in a good location to help the food drive and also serve the Millington residents and those in Munford and Atoka too,” she concluded. “We want to serve all of Tipton County, and Millington is growing.”
