In her trademark pink, Sami Jo Schulz signs her letter of intent with her family by her side on her 18th birthday Nov. 15.

Munford Lady Cougar Senior Sami Jo Schulz was joined by family, friends, coaches and teammates this morning for her signing ceremony. On her 18th birthday Schulz inked her national letter of intent to play softball for The University of Memphis Lady Tigers.

The Lady Tigers will be a part of the Big East Conference by the time Schulz arrives on campus. With her parents Annette and Dave, and older brother Steven present, Sami Jo officially became the second Lady Cougars to sign a Division I scholarship joining former Ole Miss Lady Rebel Cali Overbeck.

Like Overbeck, Schulz plays shortstop for Glenn Goulder’s Lady Cougars.

Overbeck was known as a power hitter. Schulz has made a team for herself at Munford at the leadoff spot in the batting lineup. When she reaches base, the Lady Cougars score nearly 80 percent of the time.

Schulz is one of the best players in the area defensively and she has helped Munford reach back-to-back State Tournaments. The trip in 2011 was the first in the program’s history.
