Morrie’s Gift to St. Jude

Sisters Cathey Burness MacNeill and Karen Burness Madill had a fundraiser for St. Jude @ Morrie’s Tavern (Jan McGovern owner) on Oct. 27. The group raised money by having a chinese auction, selling St. Jude T-shirts, cutest bartender baby picture contest,selling lunch plates, and St. Jude pinups.DJ Rick West and Dave donated their time for tips only. Jerry McGovern and Boss Jan donated $1 for every beverage sold between noon and 5 p.m..Morrie’s Tavern would like to thank all the businesses and patrons that donated items and their time. VFW post 7175 sold $209 in pinups, Men’s Auxillary and Ladies Auxillary that both donated $50. Special guest Mellissa McGovern who is a 19-year survivor of St. Jude announced our winner of auction items and door prizes. Thanks to Ken Bro who donated 21 inches of his hair to St. Jude as well as Locks of Love. They raised $3,335 for St. Jude. Also a big thank-you to Sarah Eldridge (senior event marketing representative) with St. Jude who made this event possible.


Month of November

The Kiwanis Club of Millington’s annual Christmas Tree sales began on Nov. 23.   Sales location is the Millington Farmers Market. Kiwanis members are present from 4-8 p.m., Monday-Friday; 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. on Saturday; and 1 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Sunday.  Sales will continue until all trees are sold. All proceeds go back into the community for various service projects.  Projects include scholarship for a MCHS graduating senior, support for the annual Christmas Basket program, the Millington Crisis Center, Boy Scouts, Ronald McDonald House, Hope House- just to name a few. Kiwanis International includes more than 8,000 clubs with nearly 400,000 members in more than 85 nations.  This past year, Kiwanis clubs donated more than $100 million and almost 6 million volunteer hours for community-service projects.


Fall Adult Co-ed Recreational Volleyball are underway. Games will be played on Saturdays starting Jan. 12.  There will be a 10 game schedule with a single elimination tournament following completion of the regular season. The season will approximately be over the first weekend of April. All games will be played at the Millington Civic Center Gym. Each team will have 10 players. Rosters will be frozen at the start of the season. You will not be able to add and/or drop players. Three girls and three guys on the court at a time. You can play with more girls than guys but not vice versa.


Send your favorite holiday recipes, and the Millington Arts and Recreation Department will post them to their Facebook page during the holiday season. Be sure to include your name, category of dish (breakfast, lunch, diner, dessert, snack, drink, etc), the recipe (broken down into ingredients and steps), and a low-resolution photo of the dish if you happen to have one. Millington Arts and Recreation is announcing several new programs this month. Senior Computer Class: Learn the basics of using a computer! If you have not used a computer before, or have difficulty using one, this is the class for you. This is a great way to communicate with your family, especially your precious grandchildren!  Classes will be held on Mondays and Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., and is free of charge. Game Time: Have fun and reduce stress levels with a great way to relax and unwind! This is a time to enjoy board games and card games, such as checkers, chess, monopoly, scrabble, pictionary, and more! No electronic games will be allowed. Game time is free and available Mondays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Wednesdays from 4 p.m.-8 p.m., and Fridays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.  For more information, call 873-5770.


Come by the YMCA and mail your Santa letter between Nov. 23-Dec. 15. Santa’s Elf will reply to all letters. Then come and join us on Friday, Dec. 7 for the Annual Craft Fair between 9 a.m. -1 p.m., if you can’t make it on Friday, try Saturday, Dec. 8 from 10 a.m. -1 p.m. While you’re here, bring the children for cookies, pictures and games with Santa. For the athletes, start early and participate in our Santa Swim by swimming 1 mile or try or Mistletoe Mini-triathlon which includes swimming 100 yards; biking (indoor cycle) 6 miles and finishing with a  mile walk/run (treadmill),  the nursery will be available. Month of December

First United Methodist Church will once again have Christmas boxes of food for those in need.  The sign up dates are Dec. 3 – 6.  The boxes will be ready for pickup on Saturday Dec. 22 starting at 8 a.m.  Call the church on the above dates at 872-4414.


Millington Central High School will host the annual Financial Aid Workshops for Senior Parents on Tuesday, Dec. 4 at 9 a.m. and at 6 p.m. in the Freshman Academy.  The guest speakers will be  Jim Shannon, Dean of Student Financial Services at Christian Brothers University and Felicia Orr from Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation. All seniors and their parents are invited to attend either of these events.  Information will be provided on the financial aid application process, completing the FAFSA, Tennessee-funded financial aid opportunities such as the HOPE scholarship and Wilder Naifeh grants, Federal Pell grants, and much more. Dec. 1

A Holiday Concert featuring Navy Band Mid-South will be held Friday at the Navy Mid-South Conference Center at the Pat Thompson Building N-767 (5700 Attu St. Millington) Concert starts at 7 p.m. The eventing will feature a variety of seasonal music and a special appearance by Santa Claus. The concert if free and open to the public.


Dec. 1-2

The First Assembly of God located at 1422 Old Highway 51 in Brighton will have a Christmas presentation “Christmas In A Small Town” Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 6 p.m. to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The Pastor of First Assembly of God church is Keithel Boothe and Music Director Cindy R. Simmons would like to invite the public to hear the music, singing and telling the story of Christmas. Dec. 8

Cookies with Santa will be held Saturday  from 11:30 a.m. -1 p.m. Come spend the afternoon with Santa at the Millington YMCA.  Reindeer games and pictures with Santa will be taken from 11:30-noon, followed by cookie decorating until 1. Dec. 7-8

Christmas Crafts Fair will be held Friday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and Saturday, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Come for homemade crafts, ornaments, jellies and gift ideas for purchase. Dec. 8

Mistletoe Mini-triathlon will be held Saturday. Swim 100 yards in the Millington Family YMCA’s  Indoor pool; bike 6 miles on an Indoor cycle and walk/run 1 mile on a treadmill. First Heat starts at 8 a.m. Register by Nov. 16 to receive a T-shirt and category winners receive a trophy. Wear your best Holiday hat. There is an entry fee.  Register at the Welcome Center. Munford Baptist Church presents “Christmas Village 2012,” Saturday, from 6-8 p.m. Family event for all ages and admission is free. Come and visit the magical Christmas Village that will include music, snacks, and village shops that children will love! Have a blast inside our indoor snow area too. Upper Canaan M. B. Church located at 9090 Highway 51 North in Millington, will have  a Clothes-Give-Away Saturday, Dec. 8 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. An assortment of clothes and shoes for male and female adults as well as for boys and girls of all ages will be available. Accessories such as jewelry, belts, hats, scarves and gloves will be also be given. Household items (such as comforters, draperies, lamps ,etc.)along with  toys and Christmas ornaments/decorations will be included.  Pastor Julius Hawkins and members are asking all who can and will to come.
