By Thomas Sellers Jr.Brighton v Munford

There were a few storylines coming into Friday night’s Brighton/Munford boys’ game.

The Brighton Gymnasium was nearly filled with spectators anticipating the showdown of Munford Cougars Jonathan Stark and Kameron Foster taking on their old team the Brighton Cardinals.

But Munford players like Andre Bell knew the youthful Cardinals would come into the game hyped and ready to take down the Cougars.

“We just had to come into this game focused and prepared,” he said. “We knew this wasn’t going to be an easy game. So we came in mentally focused. We knew physically we could beat them. But we had to come in here mentally ready and start the game off right.”

The Cougars used their size advantage with Bell and center Kylon Hall accompanied by clutch plays from Starks to pull out 69-59 victory.

The Cardinals composed mostly of underclassmen stuck with the Cougars in the first half. The score was tied 15-15 after one quarter.

And Darryle Rogers’ Cardinals held an early lead in the second quarter at 22-17 behind a Derrick Somerville three-pointer.

Stark went on a personal 7-0 run to help his team regain the lead. With a pair of triples and free throw from the UT-Chattanooga signee the Cougars were ahead 24-22.

Brighton regained the lead at 25-24 when Bell went to work in the post. The power forward was able to hit a layup to make the score 26-25.

Somerville put the Cardinal back ahead with a layup. Cougar Antonio Moore hit a layup of his own to put Munford back ahead 29-27. Then a Stark free throw made the score 30-27.

Brighton was able to tie the game at 30-30 when Lorenzo Hunt was fouled shooting a three-pointer. Hunt made all three foul shots.

Then Somerville put his team ahead for a third time attacking the basket among the Munford trees to make the score 32-30. Bell even the score with a pair of free throws making the halftime score 32-32.

The third started close with the Cardinals making big shots to stay within two points after Milton Hardy made a layup. The Cougars were ahead 44-42.

Munford went on to outscore Brighton 11-6 down the stretch to build a 55-48 lead at the end of the third quarter. Bell had four of the points in that stretch.

A Bell free throw started the fourth quarter. Then Stark nailed a baseline jumper to make the score 58-48.

After Hunt made a jump shot, Hall took his turn in the post with a bucket. Then Foster hit a floater that made the score 62-50.

Then Hall had the highlight of the quarter grabbing a rebound in the paint. With a pump-fake, Hall went over a Cardinal defender for a one-arm slam making the score 64-52.

The Cougars used shots from Stark and free throw from Bell down the stretch to hold for a 10-point victory.

“If we keep that going all year, nobody can play us,” Bell concluded. “It feels good to get off to this good start and get this rivalry win.”
