Why Gun-Free Zones Don’t Work

By David Peel

Gun-frees zones do not work. With just one exception, every public shooting since at least 1950 in the U.S. in which more than three people have been killed has taken place where citizens are not allowed to carry guns.

But aren’t guns dangerous? Research the number of shootings at gun shows.  It is zero.  There are 200 million privately owned firearms in our country. Unless you melt down every single one, criminals will always have guns. The only question is will armed defenders confront them before they kill at will?

In the tragic Newtown, Connecticut, shooting, the evil killer first murdered his own mother and then stole her legal guns. A five-foot tall female principal bravely threw herself at the gunman with nothing to fight with. In school shootings, heroic teachers have resorted to wielding “weapons” like chairs, fire extinguishers and even themselves. These evil madmen rage against the innocent and the helpless. Satan has always hated children. (We often leave out Herod’s mass murder of children in the Christmas story.) Guns are already banned in schools, which is exactly why the shootings happen in schools.  “A school is a ‘helpless-victim zone,’” says Richard Mack, a former Arizona sheriff.

Criminals who will murder their own mother will ignore your cute little sign saying, ”No guns allowed.”  Shopping malls, churches, schools and temples are picked, as they will offer no defense.

“Preventing any adult at a school from having access to a firearm eliminates any chance the killer can be stopped in time to prevent a rampage,” said Jim Kouri of the National Association of Chiefs of Police.  The main reason against armed officials in schools is that it would not be safe to allow “shootouts.” However, they hypocritically want the police to come and shoot the bad guy. It matters not which bullet kills the gunman!  As the saying goes, “When seconds count, police are just minutes away.”

In Salt Lake City, Utah, a citizen with a gun stopped a knife-wielding man as he began stabbing two people in a store. A guy pulled a gun on him and told him to drop his weapon or he would shoot him. So, he dropped his weapon. By the time officers arrived, employees and shoppers had subdued the suspect. Police had high praise for the gun carrying man who ended the hysteria. Lt. Brian Purvis said, “This was a volatile situation that could have gotten worse. We can only assume from what we saw it could have gotten worse. He was definitely in the right place at the right time.” Dozens of other shoppers are also thankful for the gun carrying man.  I wish there was one in the front row of that tragic Aurora movie theater, and one in that Newtown school hallway.
