Coming From Behind the Scene

Star Staff ReportsBUS Sigee and crew 1-3

In 2008, Payless ShoeSource launched the Payless GivesTM Shoes 4 Kids program in the United States, giving away $1 million worth of free shoes. In 2009, Payless extended the program beyond the U.S. to reach families in need in Canada, Puerto Rico and 11 Latin American countries. Now in its fifth year, the program is going strong. Payless ShoeSource continues to partner with local nonprofits to help them identify the best places to give away more than $1.5 million worth of free children’s shoes.

“I first applied for the grant in 2009 (turned down in 2009),” grant writer Debra Sigee recalled. “However, Dream first received the Payless GivesTM Shoes 4 Kids in 2010.”

Dream Interfaith Ministries was selected for a third year to partnership with Payless Shoe Source out of consideration for the nearly 1,000 organizations that applied for the Payless Gives Shoes 4 Kids program to make a difference in the lives of children in the Millington community. On Dec. 22, 332 infants, children and teenagers received a free pair of shoes from the Payless Store in Millington. To ensure no young person in need of shoes would be turned away the Millington Kiwanis Club, resident Louise Kennon, Aldermen Mike Caruthers, Larry Dagen, Hank Hawkins, Chris Ford and Alderwoman Bethany Huffman contributed funds to make the day a success of smiling children leaving the Millington Payless Shoe store with a brand new pair of shoes or boots and a pair of socks.
