Awearness

Tipton-Rosemark Academy recently collected and donated 520 pairs of jeans to the Teens for Jeans Program, sponsored by DoSomething, Aéropostale and P.S. from Aéropostale.   These organizations have partnered with more than 1,000 homeless shelters across the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. The jeans will be donated to a homeless shelter in our community.  The TRA event was organized by the TRA Beta Club.  Pictured are Beta Club representatives Matthew Canon, Madison Cranford and Hunter Wilson

Month of January

Kids in Christ the King is a youth program at West Union Cumberland Presbyterian Church. It is for children ages 3 years old to 17 years old and meets every Wednesday night from 6-8 p.m. Dinner is served at 6 p.m. The first session was Jan. 24 in the Family Living Center. The Rosemark Reds 10AA Competitive Baseball Team is looking for players to complete their Spring 2013 roster. The team plays in local USSSA tournaments. The Reds practice primarily in Millington. Players can’t turn 11 before May 1, 2013 to be eligible. For more information, call 581-0791.

 

Sign up today for The Millington Family YMCA’s Youth Coed Soccer League, ages 4 to 15 yrs. Registration will be held Jan. 7-Feb. 10. Program is April 6–May 25. Participants will receive jersey, shorts & socks. We also have our Little Kickers, ages 2 & 3. Structured Parent/Child Interaction where child will learn introductory skills in the sport of soccer. Motor development will also be emphasized. 30 minute sessions (Time TBA). Child receives an official t-shirt and achievement trophy. Register now through February – Register now through February for youth baseball, softball, and T-ball, ages: 4-17. Practice begins in mid March. The season will last from mid-May through mid-July. There is a fee. For more information call 873-5770.

 

Watercolor Art Class: Learn the art of watercolor from National Award Winner Barrie Foster beginning January 17.  Classes will be held on Thursdays from 2 until 4 p.m., and there is a fee per class.  For more information and a list of supplies needed for the class, call 873-5770.

 

Senior Computer Class: Learn the basics of using a computer! If you have not used a computer before, or have difficulty using one, this is the class for you.  This is a great way to communicate with your family, especially your precious grandchildren!  Classes will be held on Mondays and Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., and there is a fee (cost of materials). For more information, call 873-5770.

 

Penmanship:  Don’t let your children miss out on this important skill.  Children are no longer being taught how to write in cursive in many schools.  Allow your child to learn his/her real penmanship.  This class is completely free! For more information, call 873-5770.

 

Game Time: Have fun and reduce stress levels with a great way to relax and unwind! This is a time to enjoy board games and card games, such as Checkers, Chess, Monopoly, Scrabble, Pictionary, and more. No electronic games will be allowed. Game time is free and available Mondays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Wednesdays from 4-8 p.m., and Fridays from 10am-4pm. For more information, call 873-5770.

 

Self Defense with John Camacho: Learn how to defend yourself in a compromising situation.  Schedule: Tuesday 6-8 p.m., and Saturday noon-2 p.m.  There are fees.  First month is free for everyone. Wear loose clothing and tennis shoes.  For more information, call 873-5770.

Jan. 25-26

Auditions will be held for Playhouse 51’s next production, The Psychic, at the Harvell Civic Center on Friday, Jan. 25 from 7–9 p.m. and on Saturday, Jan. 26, from 10 a.m.–noon.  The Psychic, a murder mystery of sorts follows the chaotic life of Adam Webster, a down on his luck writer, who has put a sign in his apartment window in desperation to make rent:  “Psychic Readings $25.”  The sign soon draws in a colorful group of characters.

Needed are four men, ages 30-50 and two women, ages mid 20’s – 40.  Characters are  Adam Webster – A mystery y writer; Laura Benson – an attractive woman; Roy Benson – Laura’s husband; Rita Malone – Roy’s sexy girlfriend; Johnny Bubbles – a gangster type; and Norris Coslow – An NYPD Detective.  Please email Jane Lester, stage manager for more information at janelester@xipline.com.

Playhouse 51 is a non-profit community theatre that produces 4 shows per year.  The organization meets the third Tuesday of each month in the main auditorium at the Millington Civic Center at 7:o0 PM.  Playhouse 51 welcomes new members and volunteers. TR Studio’s and Friends are hosting a St. Jude Benefit with singing, dancing, face painting and concessions at the Strand Theater located at 7979 Wilkinsville Road in Millington on Jan. 26. The event will start at 2 p.m. with the theme Together we can help preserve the world’s greatest asset – our children. Donations of any amount will be accepted. Feb. 2

Feb. 4

The next meeting of the Lucy Garden Club will be on Feb. 4. The guest speaker will be Jim Crouder, the Mid-South’s “Plant Doctor,” from the Dan West Garden Centers. Crouder will be discussing “Insecticides and Herbicides,” everything you need to know to keep your veggies and flowers bug free. In addition, how to get eliminate pesky weeds that plagues your lawn and gardens. Lucy Garden Club meets at the Lucy Wedding Chapel, 8185 Chase Road in Lucy. Feb. 5

The annual luncheon for the Fashion Show and Card Party will be held Feb. 5 at St. Anne Episcoal Church located at 4063 Sykes Road in Millington starting at 11 a.m. Tickets are available prior to the event. Month of February

AARP offers free tax preparation assistance at six locations in Shelby County from February 1st through April 17. Volunteers prepare tax returns and file them electronically with the IRS. No appointments are necessary. It is first served with priority going to those age 60 or higher. Come early because the daily capacity of each site fills up quickly.

SPRING EVENT 

The Men’s Annual Sportsman’s Feast will be held at Crosspointe Baptist Church on Friday starting at 5:45 p.m. March 1. Dinner will begin at 6:30. There are fees and guest speaker will be Randy Sharp (Higher Aim Ministries). Tickets went on sale at Crosspointe on Jan. 21. For more information, call the church office at 872-4413.
