With her escort Vernon King by her side, Millington Central High School student Nicole Neely got the shock of her senior year standing near half court of the William Osteen Gymnasium.

Her name was called over the public address system Friday night between the girls’ and boys’ game between Cordova and Millington as part of Winterfest 2013.

“I’m very excited,” Neely said moments after being named Queen. “I was on Homecoming Court last year. This is way better winning my senior year.

“It does make my senior year sweeter winning even though my best friend was on the court with me,” she added. “If either one of us would have won, it would have been great to me.”

Her fellow senior Gabrielle Hairston was one of four seniors on the 2013 Winterfest Court. She was escorted by her father Gregory. Along with Hairston and Neely, seniors Tierra Ford and Joshlyn Hurtley were on the court escorted by fathers Terrance Ford and Chris Hurtley.

The juniors on the court were Asha Burks (James Burks), Alexandria Martin (Barron Martin) and Cassidy Strange (Andrew Strange). Sophomore representatives were Devin McSwain (Chris McSwain) and McKenzie Morrow (Melissa Morrow). The lone freshman on the court was Charity Foster escorted by her father Cazzie Foster Sr.

Among the girls in the dresses, the one leaving with the tiara from MCHS Principal Mark Neal was Neely.

“I didn’t do too many extra curricular activities,” Neely concluded. “But to win something like this is overwhelming. I’m so glad I won. I hope that my underclassmen look up to me and I can be a good example for them.”
