The Millington Trojans/Cordova Wolves game Friday night started off as a contest of turnovers, missed shots and miscues.
But the chaos blossomed into a thriller in the William Osteen Gymnasium. Nursing a 42-38 lead in the fourth quarter against their District 14-3A foes, the Trojans were outscored 14-7 down the stretch.
Millington trailed 52-49 with 4.6 seconds remaining. The Trojans had one more shot to force an overtime but the three-point attempt of Willie Mudbone rolled off the rim giving the Wolves a three-point win.
Millington trailed at the final buzzer and early in the contest falling behind 10-8 after one quarter. Both teams turned over the ball and missed layups in transition only combining for 18 points in the first eight minutes.
In the second quarter the Trojans tallied 15 points of their own. Cordova managed 11 points falling behind Millington 23-21 at the break.
Trojan guard Jerick Newsome tied the game at 10-10 with a layup. Then Millington forced a steal with Newsome missing a layup. Not to worry, his teammate El Paso Johnson flew in for a one-hand tip-back dunk giving the Trojans a 12-10 lead.
Cordova regained the lead at 16-14. Then Millington proceeded with a 9-5 run sparked by Roddarius Johnson’s layup.
Then Newsome drained a three-pointer to make the score 19-16 in the favor of Millington. The Trojans maintained the advantage thanks to center DeCarlos Holmes. The senior big man made a bucket inside and then nailed a jumper giving the Trojans the two-point lead at halftime.
Millington stayed ahead the entire third quarter starting with a Tevin Oliver layup in traffic. Then Millington got contributions from Newsome and guard Willie Mudbone making the score 34-28.
Then it was the El Paso Johnson Show. The senior forward took a quick alley-oop pass from Newsome for a two-hand slam over two Cordova defenders.
Moments later, Johnson struck again with another tip-back jam this time over several players making the score 38-33 in favor of Millington heading into the fourth quarter.
The early moments of the fourth quarter saw Millington miss five foul shots that could have extended the 39-38 lead. Johnson finally made the score 41-38 with a layup. After Mudbone made one of two foul shots the score was 42-38.
The rest of the quarter the Wolves were on the attack outscoring Millington 12-3 to take a 50-45 lead. Holmes brought the Trojans closer driving to the rim for a bucket. Then the center hit another jumper that made the score 50-49.
Millington regained possession of the ball with 43.7 seconds remaining. The Trojans dribbled down the clock to 16.8 seconds then called a timeout to set up a final shot.
When action resumed, the Trojans tried to get the ball into the hands of Johnson. But the Wolves surrounded him forcing a turnover with 4.6 seconds left.
Cordova made both foul shots leaving the Trojans with just a chance to tie. But the shot rimmed out and the Wolves had the win.
