Pair of State Reps.

Millington Central High School seniors George Odum and Antonio Webber display their Tennessee/Kentucky Border Bowl All-Star rings. The duo represented Millington on the Tennessee team with Webber scoring a touchdown in the contest.

Month of February

Kids in Christ the King is a youth program at West Union Cumberland Presbyterian Church. It is for children ages 3 years old to 17 years old and meets every Wednesday night from 6-8 p.m. Dinner is served at 6 p.m. The first session was Jan. 24 in the Family Living Center. Sign up today for The Millington Family YMCA’s Youth Coed Soccer League, ages 4 to 15 yrs. Registration will be held Jan. 7-Feb. 10. Program is April 6–May 25. Participants will receive jersey, shorts & socks. We also have our Little Kickers, ages 2 & 3. Structured Parent/Child Interaction where child will learn introductory skills in the sport of soccer. Motor development will also be emphasized. 30 minute sessions (Time TBA). Child receives an official t-shirt and achievement trophy. Local author and community activist Josephine Hasan-Kerr will be hosting a book signing at the NEX, on NSA Mid-South base. Grandparents Raising Grandchildren: This support group is dedicated to grandparents raising their grandchildren.  Share your experiences, advice, and stories with others on Fridays from 11:00am until 12:30pm beginning February 15.  For more information or to register for this class, please call 873-5770.

 

AARP offers free tax preparation assistance at six locations in Shelby County from February 1st through April 17. Volunteers prepare tax returns and file them electronically with the IRS. No appointments are necessary. It is first served with priority going to those age 60 or higher. Come early because the daily capacity of each site fills up quickly.

Register now through February – Register now through February for youth baseball, softball, and T-ball, ages: 4-17. Practice begins in mid March. The season will last from mid-May through mid-July. There is a fee. For more information call 873-5770.

 

Watercolor Art Class: Learn the art of watercolor from National Award Winner Barrie Foster began Jan. 17.  Classes will be held on Thursdays from 2 until 4 p.m., and there is a fee per class.  For more information and a list of supplies needed for the class, call 873-5770.

 

Senior Computer Class: Learn the basics of using a computer! If you have not used a computer before, or have difficulty using one, this is the class for you.  This is a great way to communicate with your family, especially your precious grandchildren!  Classes will be held on Mondays and Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., and there is a fee (cost of materials). For more information, call 873-5770.

 

Penmanship:  Don’t let your children miss out on this important skill.  Children are no longer being taught how to write in cursive in many schools.  Allow your child to learn his/her real penmanship.  This class is completely free! For more information, call 873-5770.

 

Game Time: Have fun and reduce stress levels with a great way to relax and unwind! This is a time to enjoy board games and card games, such as Checkers, Chess, Monopoly, Scrabble, Pictionary, and more. No electronic games will be allowed. Game time is free and available Mondays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Wednesdays from 4-8 p.m., and Fridays from 10am-4pm. For more information, call 873-5770.

 

Self Defense with John Camacho: Learn how to defend yourself in a compromising situation.  Schedule: Tuesday 6-8 p.m., and Saturday noon-2 p.m.  There are fees.  First month is free for everyone. Wear loose clothing and tennis shoes.  For more information, call 873-5770.

 

Ballroom Dance Lessons: Join us from 6:00pm-8:00pm every Wednesday for proper instruction of the art of ballroom dancing! Fees: $6.00 per person, per class.  For more information, please call 873-5770.

 

Bridge: Instruction as to how to learn to play the card game Bridge.  Classes will be held on Wednesdays from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.  There is a fee.  For more information, call 873-5770.

 

Feb. 9

The Millington Arts and Recreation Department is hosting its sixth annual Valentine’s Dinner and Concert at 5 p.m. on Saturday, for all area senior citizens. The event, held at Baker Community Center, will feature a concert by Tori Reynolds and Jack and Jule’ Dunham, featuring love songs and oldies, and a dinner, which will include house salad with dressing, spiral sliced ham or cranberry chicken, homemade dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, dinner rolls, and an array of desserts. There is a cost. Tickets may be purchased in the office at Baker or reservations must be made by calling the department at 873-5770 so we can prepare the proper amount of food. Feb. 15

Family Skate Night will be held from 6– 9 p.m. at the Millington Civic Center gym. Entertainment will be provided by Jordabella Entertainment. There is an admission fee which includes the use of our skates.  Non-skating parents are admitted free.  Concessions will be sold.  The school with the most students in attendance will win the traveling Skate Night trophy.

 

Feb. 16

The Millington Family YMCA will host its annual Polar Plunge on Saturday at 10 a.m. to support the We Build People Campaign.  Participants will jump, or walk into our outdoor pool for a good cause, then be treated to a breakfast donated by Old Timers Restaurant. The first 50 that register will receive a Polar Plunge long sleeve T-shirt.  All proceeds will be used to send kids to camp, provide after school care for working parents and memberships for families in need.  The YMCA is located at 7725 E. Feb. 19

Mature Adults Ballroom Dance (ages 30 and up) will be held at Baker Community Center in Millington on Tuesday. Music will be by The VIPs from hours 7-10 p.m.  There is a fee and bring finger foods. For more information, contact Betty or Everett Clark at 872-3508.

 

Feb. 24

The Millington Arts & Recreation Department is hosting its seventh annual Wedding and Bridal Expo at the Millington Civic Center on Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Local vendors will display a wide array of wedding services including rental equipment, D. J. service, photography, videography, dresses, formal wear, wedding cakes, hair styles, travel services, floral, jewelry, and many more. Free refreshments will be served, and door prizes will be given away every thirty minutes, including a half-price Civic Center wedding. Bridal fashion shows will be held at 1 and 2 p.m. in the Chapel. The Civic Center’s silver wedding equipment will also be on display. These rental items, including candelabras, arches, columns, and a registry stand, are available for any Civic Center wedding. Advance tickets may be purchased at the department’s offices at Baker Community Center. For more information, call 873-5770.

 

SPRING EVENT 

The Men’s Annual Sportsman’s Feast will be held at Crosspointe Baptist Church on Friday starting at 5:45 p.m. March 1. Dinner will begin at 6:30. There are fees and guest speaker will be Randy Sharp (Higher Aim Ministries). Tickets went on sale at Crosspointe on Jan. 21. For more information, call the church office at 872-4413.

 

Square Dance lessons

The Dungarees & Petticoats Square Dance Club will begin a Square Dance Class on Friday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. in the old Fellowship Hall at St. Williams Catholic Church, 4932 Easley at West Street Millington, TN 38058. If you would like to learn how to square dance or have square danced before and need to recycle, you are welcome to come and join us. Singles are welcome. The class will be open to new members through Friday, Feb. 22. PMSC is selling Boston Butts for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. They will be ready just in time for Easter. Pre-order & Pre-pay by March 15. Boston Butts will be ready for pickup at the Main Shop on March 28. They will be $30 each and you can make checks payable to the American Cancer Society.
