Month of February

Kids in Christ the King is a youth program at West Union Cumberland Presbyterian Church. It is for children ages 3 years old to 17 years old and meets every Wednesday night from 6-8 p.m. Dinner is served at 6 p.m. The first session was Jan. 24 in the Family Living Center. Local author and community activist Josephine Hasan-Kerr will be hosting a book signing at the NEX, on NSA Mid-South base. Grandparents Raising Grandchildren: This support group is dedicated to grandparents raising their grandchildren.  Share your experiences, advice, and stories with others on Fridays from 11:00am until 12:30pm beginning February 15.  For more information or to register for this class, please call 873-5770.


AARP offers free tax preparation assistance at six locations in Shelby County from February 1st through April 17. Volunteers prepare tax returns and file them electronically with the IRS. No appointments are necessary. It is first served with priority going to those age 60 or higher. Come early because the daily capacity of each site fills up quickly.

Register now through February – Register now through February for youth baseball, softball, and T-ball, ages: 4-17. Practice begins in mid March. The season will last from mid-May through mid-July. There is a fee. For more information call 873-5770.


Watercolor Art Class: Learn the art of watercolor from National Award Winner Barrie Foster began Jan. 17.  Classes will be held on Thursdays from 2 until 4 p.m., and there is a fee per class.  For more information and a list of supplies needed for the class, call 873-5770.


Senior Computer Class: Learn the basics of using a computer! If you have not used a computer before, or have difficulty using one, this is the class for you.  This is a great way to communicate with your family, especially your precious grandchildren!  Classes will be held on Mondays and Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., and there is a fee (cost of materials). For more information, call 873-5770.


Penmanship:  Don’t let your children miss out on this important skill.  Children are no longer being taught how to write in cursive in many schools.  Allow your child to learn his/her real penmanship.  This class is completely free! For more information, call 873-5770.


Game Time: Have fun and reduce stress levels with a great way to relax and unwind! This is a time to enjoy board games and card games, such as Checkers, Chess, Monopoly, Scrabble, Pictionary, and more. No electronic games will be allowed. Game time is free and available Mondays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Wednesdays from 4-8 p.m., and Fridays from 10am-4pm. For more information, call 873-5770.


Self Defense with John Camacho: Learn how to defend yourself in a compromising situation.  Schedule: Tuesday 6-8 p.m., and Saturday noon-2 p.m.  There are fees.  First month is free for everyone. Wear loose clothing and tennis shoes.  For more information, call 873-5770.


Ballroom Dance Lessons: Join us from 6:00pm-8:00pm every Wednesday for proper instruction of the art of ballroom dancing! Fees: $6.00 per person, per class.  For more information, please call 873-5770.


Bridge: Instruction as to how to learn to play the card game Bridge.  Classes will be held on Wednesdays from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.  There is a fee.  For more information, call 873-5770.


Feb. 15

Family Skate Night will be held from 6– 9 p.m. at the Millington Civic Center gym. Entertainment will be provided by Jordabella Entertainment. There is an admission fee which includes the use of our skates.  Non-skating parents are admitted free.  Concessions will be sold.  The school with the most students in attendance will win the traveling Skate Night trophy.


Feb. 16

The Millington Family YMCA will host its annual Polar Plunge on Saturday at 10 a.m. to support the We Build People Campaign.  Participants will jump, or walk into our outdoor pool for a good cause, then be treated to a breakfast donated by Old Timers Restaurant. The first 50 that register will receive a Polar Plunge long sleeve T-shirt.  All proceeds will be used to send kids to camp, provide after school care for working parents and memberships for families in need.  The YMCA is located at 7725 E. Feb. 19

Mature Adults Ballroom Dance (ages 30 and up) will be held at Baker Community Center in Millington on Tuesday. Music will be by The VIPs from hours 7-10 p.m.  There is a fee and bring finger foods. For more information, contact Betty or Everett Clark at 872-3508.


Feb. 21

The National Active & Retired Federal Employees Association, Chapter 1382 meeting will be held at noon, Thursday, at Old Timers Restaurant in Millington. The guest speaker will be Terry Jones, mayor of Millington. For more information, call Carolyn Cribbis at 413-7123.


Feb. 24

The Millington Arts & Recreation Department is hosting its seventh annual Wedding and Bridal Expo at the Millington Civic Center on Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Local vendors will display a wide array of wedding services including rental equipment, D. J. service, photography, videography, dresses, formal wear, wedding cakes, hair styles, travel services, floral, jewelry, and many more. Free refreshments will be served, and door prizes will be given away every thirty minutes, including a half-price Civic Center wedding. Bridal fashion shows will be held at 1 and 2 p.m. in the Chapel. The Civic Center’s silver wedding equipment will also be on display. These rental items, including candelabras, arches, columns, and a registry stand, are available for any Civic Center wedding. Advance tickets may be purchased at the department’s offices at Baker Community Center. For more information, call 873-5770.


Feb. 26

An hour- and half-long informative session on Feb. 26 will be taught by Deb Ireland, an Assistant U.S. Attorney, who prosecutes Internet crimes against children for the U.S. Attorney’s Office of Western Tennessee. The class will start at 6 p.m. and is designed to educate both the teens and the parents on the dangers lurking on the Internet. Social media sites will be covered, along with other topics to include sexting, which is the sending of inappropriate photos of juveniles over the Internet and cell phones. Feb. 28

The Northern Area Prayer and Vision Casting Meeting will be held Thursday at 5 p.m. with refreshments served. First United Methodist Church, Williams Hall, at 8029 Wilkinsville Road in Millington will be the location. RSVP by Feb. 22. The Men’s Annual Sportsman’s Feast will be held at Crosspointe Baptist Church on Friday starting at 5:45 p.m. March 1. Dinner will begin at 6:30. There are fees and guest speaker will be Randy Sharp (Higher Aim Ministries). Tickets went on sale at Crosspointe on Jan. 21. For more information, call the church office at 872-4413.

PMSC is selling Boston Butts for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. They will be ready just in time for Easter. Pre-order & Pre-pay by March 15. Boston Butts will be ready for pickup at the Main Shop on March 28. They will be $30 each and you can make checks payable to the American Cancer Society.
