Last week, members of the Millington Fire Department paid a visit to Millington neighborhoods installing smoke alarms for free.

On Feb. 5, members of the Millington Fire Department made their way throughout the streets of Flag City offering free smoke alarms to residents.

As part of the State Fire Marshal’s program on fire education and prevention, Millington Fire Marshal Jack Foraker and crew went door to door checking alarms and installing the Kidde devices.

The state sent 99 smoke alarms that will work for 10-years, including the batteries. The first resident to benefit from the MFD initiative was Ruth Cutlip. The 50-year Millington resident has lived in her home on Talley Street since 1973.

Her family now has a new working alarm that was installed by MFD driver Jake Lock. Cutlip’s husband Thomas, who passed away in 2008, was a captain on the Millington Police Department and served on the force for 26 years.

Now his wife and those who live within her home can see his legacy of protecting and serving continuing through the effort of the MFD.

“I really appreciate it,” she said. “This is good to still see.”

Foraker said the smoke alarm distribution is all about giving back, informing the community and showing the residents the MFD is here to serve.

“The citizens are our customers,” he said. “This is a way for us to come out and meet them.”

The MFD members on site were Foraker, Lock, Lt. Allen Coulter, firefighter Brandon Cox, Lt. Jordan Kinney, driver Derek Thornton, and firefighter Shawn Arthur.
