With pieces of cake being handed out and smiles decorating the walls of the Brighton High School Library Feb. 19, Sid McKinney stood in the position of proud father.
After watching his daughter Carson make her dream officially come true by signing to Cumberland University, McKinney quickly said he had nothing to do with her achieving her goal to play college golf.
“You have to thank her coaches and especially her,” he said. “She had the drive and worked hard by getting the 22 on the ACT and improving her scores. This past year she has worked for this.”
Making the trip from Lebanon, 30 miles outside of Nashville, the Cumberland coaching staff of Richard Williams and Head Coach Scott Wilkerson said they were happy to be a part of the special day for Carson.
“She’s that girl you want in your program,” Wilkerson said. “She’s gotten better and better. Her scores have improved and she comes from a good school and a great family. We were able to offer her some scholarship money. It was a no brainer to offer her.”
Holding a 3.2 grade point average, Carson hit her goal of scoring more than 20 on the ACT to get a larger scholarship from her dream school.
Sid noted the nursing and education programs at Cumberland made the school his daughter’s dream destination.
“Her dream will be to work at LeBoneur one day with the children who can’t go to school,” he said. “So the programs at Cumberland are great for her.
Wilkerson said in the process of Carson getting her education, he will help her to improve her game on the course. Wilkerson is entering his 10th season as the head coach for both the men’s and women’s golf programs at Cumberland.
Under Wilkerson’s direction, the Cumberland men’s golf team has won two TranSouth Conference championships (2005, 2009) and four Bulldogs have claimed individual conference titles – Dustin Thomas (2011), Josh Young (2009), Michael Shinn (2006) and Barry Conaster (2005). Wilkerson played professionally for 10 years after his collegiate career at Tennessee Tech.
Wilkerson and Williams joined their latest signee with her family for the signing. Carson’s parents Sid and Tammy were seated by their daughter for her inking of the national letter of intent. Also on hand were her brother Garrett, grandmother Linda Wages, Brighton administrator Cetrice Bounds and friends Jennifer Jordan, Brianna Donnell, Anna McIntyre and Sarah Grape.
With so many sharing in her dream day, Sid said his daughter has earned her special moment.
“She’s a good kid,” he concluded. “She stayed focused and driven the last three years to get here.”
