Calendar of Events April 4

Several area children were hunting for Easter eggs Millington Family YMCA’s Annual Easter Eggstravaganza on March 23. More than 20 children hunted for eggs in the indoor pool of the Millington Family Y. The winners were Knox Royer (0-5 yrs old); Nathan Loving (6-9 yrs old) and Huelwin Johnson (10 and up). Spring Saturday

The Millington Crisis Center, located at 8133 Wilkinsville Road, will have a yard sale (rain or shine) the first Saturday of each month from 8 a.m.-noon. For more information or to donate, call 872-HELP (4357).

April 4

The Tipton Rosemark Academy Fine Arts Meeting Expectations organization will be performing five shows of the Rogers and Hammerstein musical South Pacific starting April 4.  On Friday night, the show will strictly be a dinner theater where patrons will be able to see the performance and have a  meal at a set ticket price. General admission to all other shows. This show will be judged by members of the Orpheum along with other schools in and around the city of Memphis.  Last year TRA was the winners of the Best Front of House. April 5 & 6

Atoka BBQ Fest is a brand new BBQ contest in 2013 sanctioned by the MBN. The contest will take place in Atoka,  on April 5 -6. It will be located at Nancy Lane Park, 118 Atoka Park Ave, on the South side of the Park. The Contest will feature two different divisions, MBN Pro and Challenger, as well as an Anything But contest for sauce, chicken, beef and dessert. The Town of Atoka is pleased to announce that Southwest Tennessee Electric Membership Corporation has been named the title sponsor for the Atoka Barbecue Festival. STEMC’s generous support of the Atoka Barbecue Festival will provide dedicated, underground electrical service to the contest site. All cooking sites offered at the Atoka Barbecue Festival will have access to electrical and water service conveniently located around the perimeter at Atoka’s Nancy Lane Park.

“We are thrilled to have the support of Southwest Electric in making the Atoka Barbecue Festival an outstanding event,” said Mayor W. Daryl Walker. “For over 75 years, Southwest has been dedicated to serving our residents and we’re proud to have them as a partner.”

The Millington Library Boosters will have their next book sale on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Civic Center on Wilkinsville Road. All proceeds go to support our library.  For more information, call Bitha Luze at 872-3635.


Lawn & Garden Expo will be held Saturday from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. at Brighton Middle School at 7785 Highway 51 South. Speakers have been engaged: Carol Reese, Horticultural Specialist with U T Extension, Chris Cooper, Director Shelby Master Gardeners and host of the PBS weekly program The Family Plot, and Janet Carson, Horticultural Specialist with University of Arkansas.


On Saturday, “Laurel’s Nutrition Nook” from the Millington OpenMarket Place will host a Spring Health Expo at Baker’s Community Center from 10 a.m.- noon in Room 6. Topics will include, Health & Nutrition at the Cellular level, Herbal Alternatives. Weight Management, Natural Skin Care and Earth Friendly Home Cleaners. April 6-7

Shelby Forest Spring Fest with live music all weekend, Car Show Saturday starts 10 a.m. – 4p.m. /Bike Show Sunday 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. with an entry fee. The admission to event is free — Arts & Crafts vendor space still available. Parking for event is also free. The event is accepting donations to go towards another Shelby Forest event. Come ride the 3 Story Hippo water slide all day with wrist bands costing a fee. A Messy Pie Eating Contest will be Saturday at 1 p.m. Music line up to be posted soon.


April 8

The Millington Book Chat Club will meet at the home of Mrs. James Burk at 7 p.m., featuring local author Nancy Foshee. She will give a presentation about writing and publishing her book Fort Douglas.


April 10

VFW Post 5225 at 406 S. Avalon, West Memphis, Ark., all members are cordially invited to join us on Wednesday at 6 p.m. for our annual installation of officers. Our goal is to make Post 5225 a place our veterans can be proud of. This special invitation is for all interested veterans including new veterans of the Iraq and Afgan wars.


April 13

St. Annes Episcopal Church will be holding their annual Attic Treasures and Plant Sale on Saturday, April 13 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m.  Bargains on gently worn clothing, furniture, houswares, knick knacks, books and toys.  Plants range from small seedlings to beautiful potted plants.  St. Annes is located at 4063 Sykes Road in Millington.  On April 6, the monthly yard sale will be held from 8 a.m. to noon at . The Millington Crisis Center and St. William Catholic Church are joining forces to raise money for the Crisis Center and the church.  The Sixth Annual Chinese Auction will be held on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at the Baker Community Center located at 7942 Church Street in Millington.  The auction will be preceded by a spaghetti dinner cooked by the Knights of Columbus. Price of the dinner is $10 per person and includes 20 tickets used for the Chinese Auction. Bidders win by placing their numbered tickets in the container in front of the item they wish to bid on.  As tickets are drawn the number of the winning ticket is called and that person claims their item.  This is a fun evening and everyone in the community is invited.  Advance tickets are now available in the church office or by contacting Bitha Luze at 872-3635 or Shirley Maes at 647-6111.  Additional auction tickets can be purchased the night of the auction. Also anyone wishing to donate an item for the auction can drop it off at the church office.


The Citywide Yard Sale date is set for Saturday April 13 from 7a.m.- noon. Deadline for free advertising is April 1. Turn in your address at Baker Community Center, e-mail to or call 873-5770. April  16 

Mature Adults Ballroom Dance (ages 30 and up) will be held at the Baker Community Center in Millington on Tuesday. Music will be by The VIPs from the hours  7-10 p.m. There is a fee and bring finger foods. For more information, contact Betty or Everett Clark at 872-3508.


April 19

Family Skate Night will be held on April 19 from 6– 9 p.m. at the Millington Civic Center gym. Entertainment will be provided by Look Left Entertainment.  There is a admission  and includes the use of our skates.  Non-skating parents are admitted free.  Concessions will be sold.  The school with the most students in attendance will win the traveling Skate Night trophy.


April 20

The Munford High School Marching Band will hold its Second Annual Wing Festival in the Munford High School Parking Lot on Saturday. This Festival will have a stage with live bands, choirs, and other musical acts, games for kids and adults, Drive for your School sponsored by Ford, an auction, Dunk Tank, and of course a Chicken Wing Competition. April 20-21

Millington First United Methodist Church located at 8029 Wilkinsville Road in Millington will host a studey Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon in Williams Hall. The Study: A Hopeful Earth-Faith, Science and the Message of Jesus by Sally Dyck and Sarah Ehrman, led by Nathan Rawls and others.   Special guest appearances by Thomas Christie, Millington city manager, Hank Hawkins, Millington city alderman and Jeremy Rochelle, Millington Parks and Recreation. Then on Sunday, services will be from 8:30 and 10:50 a.m. Celebration of Creation Care Sunday, to coincide with Earth Day, Monday, April 22.  Sermon by Rev. Ed White. Focus on praise for God’s creation and the individuals responsibilities as stewards of God’s creation.  Reception and memorial tribute for Bob deMarigny at 10 a.m. in Williams Hall.

The Upper Canaan Women’s Fellowship/Outreach Ministry will host its annual Seven Hats Christian Women Should Wear to Keep Them in Perfect Peace Program Sunday at 2 p.m. Seven spirit-filled speakers will adorn Spring hats and deliver God’s Word. The hats are: Put on the Hat of Prayer and Meditation, Model the Hat of Caring and Sharing, Work in the Hat of Loyalty and Dedication, Extend the Hat of Forgiveness and Thanksgiving, Keep on the Hat of Faith and Hope, Enjoy the Hat of Peace and Joy, and Share the Hat of Love and Salvation. Musical selections will be rendered, prayers prayed, scriptures read, poems recited, and food served. Please come and share in this glorious occasion. Movies at the Market: Millington Arts and Recreation is proud to announce “Movies at the Market” at the Millington Farmers’ Market on April 26.  We will be showing “Hotel Transylvania” starting at 7:45 p.m.  There is an admission per person, and includes popcorn, tea, lemonade, and water.  Bring your blankets and lawn chairs, and enjoy an evening of family, fun, and entertainment.  For more information, call 873-5770.
