ARLINGTON — The Munford Lady Cougars advance in the Region 7-3A Softball Tournament after picking up a 4-2 win over the Arlington Lady Tigers tonight in Arlington.
The Lady Cougars entered the game as the runner up of District 13-3A . The Lady Tigers earned the right to host the game at the Arlington Softball Field by winning the District 14-3A Softball Tournament last week.
Arlington didn’t have enough to overcome Munford starter Tara Comer, defensive gems by Maggie Johnson and the Lady Cougar hot bats in the second inning. Munford scored four runs in the frame to take a 4-0 lead.
Lady Cougars Peyton Joyner, Maddison Welch and Tori Ray all drove in runs in the second inning.
The Lady Tigers staged two rallies in the game that produced one run each. Both comeback attempts were ended by Johnson.
The senior second baseman stopped the Lady Tigers first rally by fielding a ground ball and racing to first base to step on the bag for the final out. In the fourth inning Arlington scored another run to make the tally 4-2. With two Lady Tigers on base, Johnson raced to the outfield to make a backhand grab for the final out killing that rally.
Comer neutralized the Arlington bats for the final three innings to help Munford advance. The Lady Cougars have secured a spot in Sub-State later this week. Munford will be in action Wednesday night at 6 p.m. in Savannah taking on the Hardin County Lady Tigers for the Region 7-3A championship.
