Calendar June 27

The River City Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution held a luncheon May 11, 2013, to recognize several outstanding students in the Millington area. Each student was awarded a certificate, a monetary award and a “Patriotic Gift Bag.” Each year in May the River City Chapter honors outstanding students in various areas such as good citizenship, essay contests and Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps.

Summer Saturdays
The Millington Crisis Center, located at 8133 Wilkinsville Road, will have a yard sale (rain or shine) the first Saturday of each month from 8 a.m.-noon. For more information or to donate, call 872-HELP (4357).

Month of June
The Exchange Club of Millington meets at Old Timer’s Restaurant in Millington at noon every second and fourth Wednesday of the month. Guest are always welcomed. For more information, call 872-8888.

International Goat Days Festival Information –  Are you interested in volunteering to help with the festival this year? Senior Computer Class: Learn the basics of using a computer! If you have not used a computer before, or have difficulty using one, this is the class for you.  This is a great way to communicate with your family, especially your precious grandchildren!  Classes will be held on Mondays and Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., and there is a fee (cost of materials). For more information, call 873-5770.

June 27
St. Luke Church located at 632 St. Luke Road in Covington will host guest speaker Dr. Michael O. Minor June 27 at 11:30 a.m. Minor will be speaking on healthy eating and promoting a healthy lifestyle . The event is being assisted by the health department and Baptist Tipton. June 29
The Upper Canaan M.B. Church located at 9090 Highway 51 North will host its Annual Gospel Explosion Saturday from 1-4 p.m. Everyone is invited to share in the occasion. The anointed voices of the Smithgrove and Jones Grove Church Choirs, The Heavenly Hearts of Arkansas,the Gifted of Memphis, along with Brother Joe Curry of Historical First Baptist Church in Millington,  will all be a part of this Gospel Explosion. The Quito-Drummonds Volunteer Fire Department will be holding its annual board meeting at 5 p.m. June 29 at 261 Tate Road. The public is encouraged to come out and snacks will be served. For more information, call  835-3939.

July 3
The annual Freedom Celebration at Navy Lake will be held July 3 with gates opening at 4:30 p.m. The gate fee is $5 per vehicle. There will be fun for all and a fireworks show.

Summer
Beginning July 8 through Sept. 30, the NSA Mid-South commissary will close on Monday and Tuesday. We know that any disruption in commissary operations will impact the NSA Mid-South community. Our commissary is not alone. The decision to reduce the operational hours of commissaries impacts nearly all commissaries with only a few overseas exceptions – commisaries where there are sufficient Local National employees to remain open. We appreciate your support and patience during this time.

Free movies every Tuesday and Wednesday during June and July courtesy of Cineplanet 16 and these fine South Tipton County Chamber of Commerce members. Tickets are to be picked up at the sponsoring businesses. On June 25&26 the movie will be Zookeeper sponsored by Patriot Bank. Trojan Basketball Camp 2013 will be held July 8-11 from noon – 3 p.m. Millington Central High Basketball Camps are designed to not only enhance the individual’s skills, but also to improve one’s ability to interact with others. We provide fundamental individual instruction to each camper through a variety of coaching techniques and then incorporate those fundamentals into a team concept.  We strive  to provide campers an environment that emphasizes enthusiasm, energy and education.  Attendance at Trojan Basketball Camps will improve an athlete’s skill, insight and love of the game. Millington Central High Camps are held on the Millington Central High School campus in Millington.  Trojan Basketball camps will be held in Osteen Gymnasium.For more information, call Rob Sabau at 461-3464.

On Sept. 12, Brighton is turning 100 and the town is going to celebrate. The event is scheduled for September 13-14 and more information will come soon.

July 13
Millington City Beautiful Gardening Seminar will be held July 13 at  11 a.m at Millington Farmer’s Market.
