2013 Millington Central High School graduate Christi Lucas brought by flowers for Dana Payne at his plot in Northridge Woodhaven Cemetery on the first anniversary of his death.

Payne passed away Aug. 21, 2012 on the Millington Football Stadium turf after suffering injuries from a tackle. The 15-year-old sophomore receiver was later pronounced dead at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis. Lucas witness Payne’s last moments from her position as a manager. Lucas held the position for four years building a bond with all the players.

“They’re like brothers to me,” she said. “Losing Dana was like having a brother die. I’ve been out here three or four times in the past year to let him know I love him.”

MCHS and the Trojan Football program will host a special event at the Millington Football Stadium starting at 5:30 tonight in honor of Payne.
