Shelby County Trustee David Lenoir is alerting the public not to provide or confirm personal data if contacted by someone identifying themselves only as being associated with the Shelby County Trustee.
The Trustee has been informed that a Memphis resident was contacted by an individual identifying themselves only as a “processor with the Shelby County Trustee.” The person refused to provide their name or name of their company when asked. The caller’s number was blocked and they also refused to provide a phone number.
The caller, a male, informed the resident they were acting on a court order and provided the correct last four digits of the resident’s Social Security number apparently wanting the resident to confirm the data. When challenged by the resident, the caller became belligerent.
Third party vendors are not employed by the Shelby County Trustee for the purpose of collections or serving legal documents related to collections. Trustee staff collectors will identify themselves by name and will not ask taxpayers to confirm or provide sensitive personal or financial data. Taxpayers typically will be encouraged to come to the Trustee’s main office at 157 Poplar to speak with staff in person to pay their bill or make payment arrangements.
