The Germantown Red Devils start the 2013 season on the winning side outlasting the Millington Trojans 13-3 at Millington Football Stadium. Charlie White’s crew used an solid running game, short field, good defense and fewer penalties to pull out the 10-point win over the Trojans.

After a scoreless first quarter, both defense bent but didn’t break throughout the second quarter. But Chris Michael’s Trojans were first to get on the scoreboard when Luke Bell drilled a 21-yard field goal at the halftime buzzer to make the score 3-0 in favor of the Trojans. Eldon Tyms hooked up with receiver Chris Sanders for a 60-yard reception to set up that score.

The third quarter saw the field position shift in favor of the Red Devils. Millington punted the ball to Germantown just 53 yards away from the end zone. The Red Devils drove the ball to the 1-yard line leading to a quarterback sneak from Wesley Dacus giving Germantown a 6-3 advantage.

The final scoring play came in the fourth quarter on a Millington miscue. The ball was snapped over the punter’s head leading to a scramble in the end zone. Once the ball was fumbled, Germantown recovered for a touchdown.

Both teams return to action next week in rivalry games. Germantown will host Christian Brothers for a 7 p.m. kickoff next Friday. And the Trojans travel to Brighton to take on the Cardinals with a 7 p.m. start as well.
