After three public forums and years of discussion, voters in Atoka will have their voice in the effort to improve fire protection in the community. A sales tax referendum, increasing the local option sales tax from 9.25 percent to 9.75 percent, will be on the ballot Sept. 12.
On Tuesday, June 11, the Atoka Board of Mayor and Aldermen passed ordinance number 13-06-03 – raising the local option sales tax rate from 2.25 percent to 2.75 percent for the purpose of enhancing fire protection services in Atoka and calling a referendum of the public to approve the ordinance.
Three public forums were held to provide information to the public about the issue following passage of the ordinance by the Board.
Early voting begins on Friday, Aug. 23 – with Election Day on Thursday, Sept. 12. Early voting is available at Munford City Hall or the Tipton County Election Commission office weekdays from 3 to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. Saturday, Sept. 7 will be the final day for early voting prior to Election Day.
Election Day is Thursday, Sept. 12 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Gateway Baptist Church – 1915 Rosemark Road. All Atoka voters voting on Election Day will vote at Gateway Baptist Church, regardless of normal polling place.
