Millington Exchange Club Members, Ken and Diane Sullivan spent “A Day with Miss America.”
Mallory Hagan Miss America 2013 has as her platform during her reign “Raising Awareness of Child Abuse and Child Sexual Abuse”. The Prevention of Child Abuse is the national program of the National Exchange Club. The program was begun in 1979 and there are centers across the nation that serve families and protect children including centers in Memphis and Jackson, Tennessee. The Millington Exchange Club supports the prevention of child abuse and the other programs of service including Americanism, Community Service and Youth Projects. Mallory Hagan, Miss America 2013 came to Vicksburg, Mississippi to support and help raise awareness of Child Abuse Prevention and child sexual abuse on July 27. This was the first time in many years for Mississippi to host the reigning Miss America. Miss America Mallory Hagan said she was very excited about being invited to come to Vicksburg and seeing the great work that the Vicksburg Exchange CAP Center is doing and being able to speak out on an issue that has touched her family in many ways. She said that she knew of sexual violence that occurred in her own family and that she was very lucky that it didn’t happen to her. She chose Child Abuse Prevention as her platform because she feels that intervention is the answer to prevention. She has been on Capitol Hill several times pushing for legislation to provide money to be given to the child advocacies programs. She said she plans to continue to raise awareness even after her reign ends this year. Local and statewide officials present to greet Miss America and show support for her platform and The Exchange Club were Mayor of Vicksburg, George Flaggs, Jr., State Senator W. Briggs Hopson, III, Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves, Warren County Attorney W. Richard Johnson, State Representative Alex Monsour, Miss Mississippi Chelsea Rick 2013, and Miss Outstanding Teen Anne Elizabeth Buys 2013 for their time and support for this very important cause. Also, we were entertained throughout the day by many individuals Miss Mississippi Kimberly Morgan 2007, Debra Franco Preparatory School of Dance, Ted Holman and the musical group, Love Notz. “A Day with Miss America” began with a breakfast featuring local and statewide elected officials welcoming and commending Mallory Hagan for her accomplishments and laudatory platform. Following the breakfast was a fashion show featuring local youngsters ages six through twelve both young men and women. There was an afternoon reception and personal time available to discuss Mallory’s platform. The day was crowned with an evening banquet featuring Mallory Hagan, Miss America 2013 presenting her platform and issuing a challenging call to action to support the Exchange Club’s effort through the Vicksburg Child and Parent Center to prevent child abuse.
