The Millington Lady Trojans’ last home game of the volleyball season came before the month of September concluded.
It was just another sign of the fast pace first season of Head Coach Jessica Price. But helping her along the way in her first campaign with the Lady Trojans were seniors Haley Benham, Kara Fleming, Meghan Sands, Ariel Trice and Sierra Williams.
Price and the Millington Volleyball program came together last Thursday to honor the seniors in the William Osteen Gymnasium with Senior Night. The seniors were recognized before the game against the Kingsbury Lady Falcons, picked up a three-set victory and enjoyed a party in the back gym to conclude the night.
“It feels pretty good but I do wish we had played better than what we did,” Price acknowledged. “We tend to play to the level of our competition. Now last night was an awesome game with Cordova. We went back and forth in five set. It was definitely a good game.
“We are 4-4 in district,” she added. “We could have won a few games that were a couple of points away. I am glad we came out with a win on Senior Night. It went well and its nice to walk away with a win.”
Earlier in the week, Millington traveled to Cordova and pulled out a five-set win over the Lady Wolves. Against Kingsbury the Lady Trojans had a shorter night winning 25-7, 25-13 and 25-7.
In the first set the Lady Trojans jumped ahead 6-2 sparked by two Trice aces. Then her fellow senior Fleming made the lead too large to overcome for Kingsbury with six serves making the score 12-3.
Millington’s advantage reached double figures when Ally Hall scored on a tip to make the tally 13-3. The Lady Trojans kept the momentum rolling to win 25-7.
The second set was closer because of Millington service errors. Only ahead 9-6, Lady Trojan Lindsey Harris created separation for Millington with two aces dropping just over the net in front of the Lady Falcons to make the score 11-6. Down the stretch the Lady Trojans outscored Kingsbury 14-7 to take the set.
In the third set Williams closed out the action scoring points all around the court. She scored on volleys, hits and spikes. Then her ace from behind the service line made the score 24-7. Attacking the right base line with her serves, Williams directed one more attempt down the line and hit the back corner for the 25-7 win.
Price said she was happy the players took care of the winning part on Senior Night to make the entire day special.
“They’re hard workers and always on time,” Price said of her seniors. “They’re dedicated to the sport and they’re pretty good leaders. They made the adjustment fairly easy having five very accountable girls.”
This week will conclude the 2013 regular season for Millington. Then the Lady Trojans move onto the 2013 District 14-3A Tournament. Price said she’s looking forward to her first district tourney especially if her girls get two phases of the game in order.
“Hitting and serves, we have to hit harder and serve better,” she concluded. “That’s what we’ll be working. We have three road games next week all non-district. Then we start the district tournament on the eighth. We have to play hard and practice hard.”
