2013 TSSAA Football Playoff Previews

The TSSAA playoff brackets have been released.
But first the 2013 regular season had to come to an end. Three area teams entered Friday night with the playoffs on their mind. The Millington Trojans were trying to secure a home game in the Class 5A bracket by beating the Bolton Wildcats.
The Brighton Cardinals knew a victory over the Dyer County Choctaws would give them the District 13-3A championship and a top seed in the Class 6A playoffs.
And the Tipton-Rosemark Academy Rebels knew a win over Rossville Christian Academy would secure their first playoff berth in years. All three teams were victorious including the Rebels over Rossville 41-14.
TRA will participate in the Division II-A playoff this Friday against Franklin Road Academy. Millington will host East in the Class 5A First Round in a No. 4 vs. No. 5 contest. And Brighton outlasted Dyer County 34-28 to win the district championship. The Cardinals, the No. 2 seed, will host Memphis Central. Entering the last night of the regular season Millington and Brighton were in good shape to make the playoffs. But Head Coach Dodd Gengenbach and his Rebels faced a win-and-you’re-in senerio. TRA jumped out to a 14-0 lead before halftime against Rossville courtesy of a Austin Chambers to Logan Stewart TD pass and Zach Dickson 31-yard touchdown run.
To ease the concerns of the Rebel faithful, TRA added 13 more points in the third quarter. Connor Sanders broke free for a 20-yard touchdown run. And when Stewart scored his second touchdown of the night the tally was 27-0. After Rossville got on the scoreboard, Stewart iced the game for the Rebels with two scoring runs of 43 and 20 yards. Stewart rushed for 129 yards and TRA (4-6) clinched a playoff spot.
Millington Trojans (6-4) will be home this Friday to take on the East Mustangs in the Class 5A State Playoffs. The Mustangs enter the game with an 8-2 record.
In Class 6A, the District 13-3A champions Brighton Cardinals (8-2) will host the Central Warriors. The team out of Memphis went 6-4 on the season.
The Rebels will travel to Franklin Road (5-5) this Friday. The winner of the game will take on ECS in the second round. The Eagles earned a bye. The Millington/East winner will face either No. 1 seeded Henry County or No. 8 seed Kenwood. The Henry County Patriots went 10-0 in the regular season to earn the top spot in that quadrant. In Class 6A, the Cardinal/Warrior victor will play the winner of the Southwind/Collierville game. The Whitehaven Tigers are the No. 1 seed in that quadrant.
The first round opens this Friday with all game scheduled to kickoff at 7 p.m.
