BRENTWOOD – The Ohio Valley Conference announced today that University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball forward Tiara Caldwell has been named adidas OVC Freshman Player of the Week after a promising debut this past weekend.
Seeing action in her very first Division I game, Caldwell flirted with a double-double in the Skyhawk season opening victory over Georgia State on Nov. 8. Caldwell tallied 9 points while grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds to lift the Skyhawks in the first round of the Preseason Women’s National Invitational Tournament.
Caldwell continued her promising start when the Skyhawks made the cross-country trek to No. 25 Gonzaga on Sunday. Caldwell tallied a team-high 13 points to go with 6 rebounds in the Sunday matinee. Sunday’s contest marked just the first time that a post player has led the team in scoring since Alecia Weatherly completed the feat on Feb. 12, 2011 against Tennessee Tech.
The Millington Central High School product, Caldwell is just the first freshman to take home OVC Freshman of the Week honors since Jasmine Newsome (another Lady Trojan alum) accomplished the feat on Feb. 28, 2011. The Skyhawks tallied 13 freshman of the week honors in 2010-11.
Caldwell and the Skyhawks will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 16 when they close out their first appearance in the WNIT when they play host to Quinnipiac. Action is set to get underway at 4 p.m.
