How are things shaping up toward February?
That is a common question for high school grapplers prior to Christmas. And in Shelby County the annual Trojan Wars hosted by Millington Central High School is a good way to find some answers.
The 2013 edition took place in the William Osteen Gymnasium Saturday with area teams St. George’s, Collierville, East, Fayette Academy, Southwind and Brighton joining Millington.
The turnout has been larger in years past but Houston was also hosting it’s Blackhorse Tournament and several top wrestlers were participating in the Liberty Bowl High School All-Star game.
So Trojans like senior Luke Walker had just a few matches in his weight class, 195-pound division. But Millington athletes like Kraig Robinson got a chance to take to the mat for action.
Robinson, a senior, is one of the wrestlers Head Coach William Richardson has high hopes for when Regionals roll around in February. Other Trojans getting in matches Saturday were Tyler Denson,, Chase Mancier, William Funes, Enill Solomon, Sean Srock, Samuel Thomas, Jaxon Cook, Luis Hernandez and Jon Yates.
“Right now we’re doing well overall,” Robinson said. “We’re 2-2 and that’s better than last year. We’re just now getting a full team. We didn’t have one last year.
“As for me, I’m doing a lot better than last year,” he added. “I’m 4-0 and my weight class is 220. I hope to be one of those wrestlers Coach Richardson is talking about. I have to keep working hard and maintain my weight. I have to get stronger.”
Robinson dominated his East opponent pinning him in the first period. Other Trojans were victorious with pins and points.
Nearby was senior captain Walker assisting Richardson with instructions and pointers. Throughout the morning and afternoon, Walker could be seen working with teammates on techniques and strategies.
Robinson and Walker had a few chats during the day. And Robinson also used wise words from family to help him on the mat.
“Following in my brothers footsteps Rodney and Devante is motivating me,” he noted. “They’re giving me pointers everyday.”
Both Rodney and Devante were Trojan Wrestling greats with the Robinson brothers reaching the State Tournament in multiple seasons. With one more chance to join them, Kraig said that’s just one of his motivations. An other driving force is those who doubt Robinson’s chances of reaching the final tournament of the wrestling season.
“I could prove a lot of people wrong who said I couldn’t,” he concluded. “And it will prove to me I could do anything I set my mind to.”
