JAMES CECIL ‘JAKE’ CARTER JR.
James Cecil “Jake” Carter, Jr., 79, passed away Feb. 16, 2014. Mr. Carter was born June 29, 1934 to the late, James Cecil Carter Sr. and Mattie Thompson Carter. He was a 1952 graduate of Millington Central High School, retired from South Central Bell (AT&T) after 27 years and was well known in the community as owner of Jake’s Firework World for 50 years and Jakes Outpost. He is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy Carol Carter; sons, J.C. Carter III, Charley Carter, Chelius H. Carter; daughters, Cecil Carter Owen, Kelly Carter Vandervoort. Cheryl Tay Lachance; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. The family received friends at a catered reception Feb. 20 and service was held later at the Millington Chapel with interment in Bethuel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks memorials be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or a gift in memory of Jake Carter to Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation at curemeso.org
VAN DALE HIGGINS
Van Dale Higgins, 62, of Millington died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014 at Methodist North Hospital. Mr. Higgins worked in the foundry at International Harvester for over 10 years. He was also the Owner/Operator of Van’s Grocery & Deli in Millington. He enjoyed watching ball games, golf, and westerns. Van is survived by his daughters, Vanice Higgins Page (David) and Vallorie Jo Higgins both of Brighton; grandchildren, Allison and Abigail; mother, Sue Higgins of Millington; sister, Deborah Higgins Hall of Millington; and his companion, Lee Meeks of Bartlett. He was preceded in death by his father, Plummer Elvis Higgins. Funeral Services were held Feb. 25 Northridge Woodhaven Funeral Home. Interment was private.
