The senior quartet of Kayla Joyner, Sally Downing, Jordan Collins and Ashton Needham have achieved the championship bookend helping the Tipton-Rosemark Academy Lady Rebels defeat the Davidson Academy Lady Tigers 8-4 today in Murfreesboro.
The four Lady Rebels were a part of the school’s first State champion in 2011 as freshmen. In today’s Division II-A Softball State Tournament title game two of the seniors contributed in large part to the victory.
Needham controlled the Lady Bears from the pitching circle limiting Davidson to four runs. Meanwhile Johnie Sanfratello’s Lady Rebels put up 5 runs in the sixth inning. Collins delivered a big blow stroking a double to the outfield to score a run.
TRA’s Katie Diggs made the score 6-2 with a sacrifice fly in the frame. Then her fellow freshman Anna Claire Williams singled in the seventh run.
Rebel senior Downing closed out the scoring for TRA with a double of her own to drive home a run making the score 8-2.
Despite two runs for Davidson in the seventh inning, TRA recorded the final out giving the school its second State championship and a 27-11 overall record.
