Spring Sports Stars of the Season 2014

Star of the Season
Erik Furseth
The Munford Cougar senior goalie helped his team to a record 15 wins during the season and the district championship. In Munford’s first 18 games, Furseth only allowed 5 goals with 2 being traditional. Furseth will be heading to The University of Memphis next year after his MVP season at Munford.

Baseball Star of the Season
Blain Curtis
The TRA Rebel senior was the spark plug for 34 victories and a Division II-A State runner up finish. As the leadoff hitter, Curtis batted .400 and scored 60 runs. Of his nearly 50 hits, 14 were for extra bases including a homer. Curtis used his speed to steal 18 bases. Curtis reached base 50 times courtesy of walks or hit by pitch.

Softball Star of the Season
Jodie Duncan
One of the top hitters for the Munford Lady Cougars, Duncan used her power and timely hitting to guide her team to State. The Lady Cougars reached the Class 3A State Softball Tournament for the fourth straight season, each with Duncan on the team. She was also a vital part of the Munford defense at shortstop.

Softball Pitching Star of the Season
Ashton Needham
Delivering the final pitch to give the TRA Lady Rebels their second Division II-A State title, Needham was the one Head Coach Johnie Sanfratello gave the ball to for big games. Needham was a leader on the team helping guide eighth-grader Rachel Whitley when she started. But Needham was a crucial bat in TRA’s lineup and the leader in strike outs, innings pitched and wins in 2014.

Baseball Pitching Star of the Season
Connor Alexander
TRA’s Connor Alexander had the numbers to win Star Baseball Player of the Year batting .431 with two homers, 54 RBIs and scoring 55 runs. But Alexander had his biggest impact on the record-breaking season for the Rebels from the mound. In more than 75 innings, Alexander went 11-2 pitching big road games for Head Coach Brad Smith. The University of Memphis signee had an ERA of 1.48 with four shutouts. He even combined on a no-hitter with teammate Nathan Whitley. Alexander struck out 98 opponents this past season.

Boys’ Track Star of the Season
Demarius Curry
The Millington Trojan junior had a breakout year in football, basketball and especially track. Curry was a part of multiple relay team to reach Sectionals this past season. He reached State in the Class 3A High Jump taking fifth place.

Girls’ Track Star of the Season
Rebecca Lee
The Munford Lady Cougar senior continued the school’s tradition of reaching the Class 3A State Track Meet. Rebecca Lee participated in the discus and during the season she threw her personal best of 87 feet at Sectionals to reach State.

Tennis Star of the Season
Blake Armour and Nathan Yoder
The Brighton Cardinal duo united in April for a magical run. Blake Armour and Nathan Yoder reached the Class 3A Boys Doubles State Tournament this past May. Armour and Yoder under the guidance of Brighton Tennis Coach Kim Greer had a championship pedigree winning the District 13-3A and Region 7-3A titles.

Girls’ Newcomer of the Year
Marquisha Sanders
The Millington freshman played varsity basketball and ran track. Learning from her big brother Chris “Pokey” Sanders, Marquisha adjusted quickly to life as a Trojan. Chris was a standout wide receiver and sprinter this past year. During the basketball season, he was there to support his little sister as she learned the ropes as a guard on the Lady Trojans. Marquisha displayed potential along side youthful teammates like Tamia Alridge, Jherkia Brown and Glenda Garner. Then in track, Sanders used the guidance of older teammates to reach State in the 4x200m relay.

Boys’ Newcomer Stars of the Season Spring '14of the Year
Conner Sanders
The Ripley transfer made an impact at Tipton-Rosemark Acadcemy in basketball and baseball. He was a vital part to the success of the hoops team finishing second in district as a shooting guard. But it was baseball where Sanders made his presence felt the most. The junior second baseman played solid infield while batting .364 this season. He scored 44 runs and drove in 38 runs of his own.
