MEMPHIS — Officials from The Monsters Game football league gathered in Memphis yesterday to announce to the Mid-South and Memphis area its arrival.
With topics from the new league’s purpose to the schedule with kickoff day Aug. 17 at Greenhill Stadium in Memphis, League Director of Development Rickey Jemison placed the spotlight on the Memphis Blues Dawgs.
The Blues Dawgs will call Greenhill Stadium home and feature area talent. Attending the press conference at Larry’s Pizza were some of the league’s players defensive end Dustin Raines, running back Xavier Hawkins and defensive back Mike Shaw.
The trio of players discussed their playing background with Raines prepping at Ridgeway and Marshall Academy in Mississippi.
Hawkins played high school ball at Manassas and Germantown. Shaw might be a familiar name to Millington playing four years with rival Craigmont in the mid 2000s.
Both Hawkins and Shaw went onto college football at Northeast Mississippi and Ole Miss respectively.
All the players said they’re happy to have a platform to showcase their skills and develop in areas for a chance at the Arena Football League, Canadian Football League and even NFL.
Coaches like offensive coordinator Marcus Thomas were on hand describing the new league’s format and how it will be a challenge for players. With all starters having to play special teams and they’re offensive or defensive positions, Thomas noted the style of play will be entertaining for fans.
