GERMANTOWN — Last year the Germantown Red Devils traveled to Millington and left victors.
The Millington Trojans returned the favor Friday night leaving Red Devil Stadium with a 28-0 win over Germantown to start the 2014 season 1-0.
Behind the running of sophomore Keno Taylor, the Trojans marched down the field in the first quarter. Taylor picked up three first downs setting up an 8-yard TD run for quarterback Eldon Tyms to make the score 7-0.
Millington went ahead 14-0 in the second quarter when Artavious Thomas field a punt in his own territory. After a drop, Thomas gathered the pigskin and avoided a couple of Germantown defenders to race up the sideline for the punt return touchdown. The Trojans were ahead by two scores with 8:08 remaining in the first half.
The Trojans went into the locker room ahead 14-0. The third quarter went scoreless and then the Trojans iced the game with Thomas making another big play.
The senior safety picked off a Red Devil pass setting up Tyms’ second TD run of the game. This time the junior signal caller found the end zone from 20 yards out making the score 21-0.
Later in the quarter, Trojan defensive back Marcus Winston made an interception of his own. Millington took over at the 22 yard line. On the next play, Tyms faked a hand-
off and dumped off a quick pass to receiver Kip Fleming. Fleming was even quicker darting through the Germantown defense to outrun the competition to the end zone for a 78-yard TD.
The Trojans will kickoff the home portion of their 2014 schedule welcoming Highway 51 rival Brighton to town this Friday night for a 7 p.m. start.
