The Brighton Lady Cardinals had extra motivation coming into their rematch last week against the Millington Lady Trojans.
In August, the two squads played a four-set thriller in the William Osteen Gymnasium. The Lady Cardinals were on the victorious side. So on Sept. 8, Brighton wanted to show they had improved since the first Millington match up.
An added boost was provided for the Lady Cardinals courtesy of the Cardinal Crazies. Brighton was able to prevail over Millington in three sets 25-16, 25-15 and 28-26.
“We really try to treat every game like it’s the most important one,” Brighton senior Jada Johnson. “We take it day by day. And our student section really helps. We just love the atmosphere of Brighton. That helps us in every game, district or not.”
The Cardinal Crazies were loud dressed in superhero outfits prior to the firs serve of the non-district match. And the Lady Cardinals appeared to be a group of Wonder Women taking a 4-0 lead.
The Lady Trojans rallied in the first set to tie the score at 5-5. Brighton regrouped to take a 10-5 advantage. The score was 14-12 in favor of the Lady Cardinals when Brighton went on a 9-2 run to seize control of the first set.
The second set Millington led 4-0 with the Cardinals responding with a 9-0 run. Brighton was ahead 19-9 late in the set behind plays by Shayna Johnson and Abi Martin.
Jada Johnson slapped a kill to make the score 22-14. Then Shayna followed with a spike of her own to make the score 23-14.
Brighton won the second set 25-15 and was ahead 2-0 overall. The Lady Cardinals were looking to close out the game but Millington kept it close down 10-9.
Brighton tried to run away with the set with seven unanswered points sparked by a Sydney Cottingham spike.
Behind 17-9, the Lady Trojans went on an 11-3 run to tie the set at 20-20. Millington’s Addison Coulter gave the Lady Trojans the lead with a pair of kills to lead 22-20.
Despite giving up the lead, Johnson said the Lady Cardinals didn’t loose their cool.
“Us focusing and not getting too wild and crazy,” Jada noted, “we just pulled it out.”
Brighton regained the lead at 24-23.  The Lady Cardinals were first to reach 25 but only led by a point.
Millington managed to retake the lead at 26-25. But Cottingham block at the net tied the contest at 26-26. Brighton scored the final two points to win the set 28-26 and the game in a sweep.
“It’s so gratifying to know we can pull it out in the end,” Brighton senior Lilly Hill said. “I think our teammates are growing and in their game as well.”
As students with capes congratulated the Brighton players, Hill said the Lady Cardinals’ powers are improving game by game.
“I think we played a lot better against them this time,” she concluded. “I definitely see us progressing because we learned from our mistakes the last time.”
