But the focus was taken off the games between the girls and boys when a 13-year old from Brownsville took to center court. Joined by Brighton High School Principal Christi Huffman, Brighton Middle Principal Sabrina Sneed-Matthews, Brighton Lady Cardinals Head Coach Kent Cates, Keshaun Shephard was recognized and saluted by the crowd for his battle with leukemia.
Shephard was joined by his parents Brad and Nakesia for a presentation from the Lady Cardinal Basketball team. Back in October the Lady Cardinals organized a Monster Mash Dash 5K Run that raised $1,000 for Make-A-Wish Mid-South.
The sponsors behind the event were Team Isa Isa Baby, Big River Trading Company, Isa Partners Worldwide, Curtis Fence, Joshua A Brink, DDS, Rose of Sharon Church, Alyssa’s Papa, The Print Shop, Ming’s Buffet & Grill, Brade Carlisle -State Farm Agent, Gram & Peepa and ATC Fitness.
“We had a 5k fundraiser before our season had gotten underway and we raised $1000 for this wonderful organization,” Cates said.  This presentation took place between the boys and girls game. The BHS Cheer Team passed the “hat” for additional funding to Make-A-Wish Mid-South.”
While the ceremony was being held, the cheerleaders collected an additional $345 for Make-A-Wish. Shephard took to the microphone after speeches from Huffman and Sneed-Matthews to thank the crowd and sing the praises of Make-A-Wish.
Back in November 2011, Shephard was diagnosed with leukemia. Brighton Middle School wanted to get a wish of Keshaun granted through Make-A-Wish.
Last year Keshaun was heading to Miami to meet NBA superstar LeBron James.
“It was awesome,” Keshaun said. “We had a pretty good time. It was great to meet him.”
Shephard said the money raised by the Lady Cardinals with the 5K and the donations received at the games are important. He noted the money will give another child a chance to live out his or her dream like he did.
“This night means a lot seeing everyone giving,” he concluded. “This is all great.”
