Millington Elementary School student Anna Keller competed in the Memphis-Shelby County Spelling Bee on Feb. 7. This year’s competition started with 118 spellers. Last year, Keller exited right before the Written Vocabulary Round. This year, she was able to make it to the Written Vocabulary Round as one of 21 spellers left in the competition. After the Vocabulary Round, only 11 spellers advanced to the next round of spelling and were declared finalists. Keller was one of them. She only made three mistakes on the 25 words vocabulary sheet. After the Vocabulary round, the 11 spellers went back on stage and continued to spell words. Towards the end, Keller was one of the four girls left and the only fifth grader. Keller successfully completed 14 rounds and took the third place. The last two remaining competitors were eighth graders and they went for about three more rounds until the champion was declared. The word that concluded Keller day was viand, not on the study list. She is happy with the result and we are, too. We wanted to share this great news with the community and also with her teachers. Thank you to all the teachers that contribute to Anna’s education every day.
