MFD rescue nearly frozen cat out of tree

By Thomas Sellers Jr.

Cat 5 Cat 1Freezing temperatures and wintry weather have broken out a rash of animal rescues across the United States.

Millington became the latest when Engine 335 A Shift of the Millington Fire Department was summoned to 7844 Harrold Cove Wednesday afternoon for a cat stuck in a tree. The feline was up in the air about 40 feet since the previous night.

On Monday sleet and ice covered Millington. Tuesday night into Wednesday morning temperatures dropped into the teens. The cat was spotted in the tree during that time.

The MFD were called and Driver Shawn Arthur, Lt. Phillip Fernald and Firefighter Ryan Wiggins were on the scene for several minutes trying to rescue the cat. After attempts with long boards and rope didn’t bring the cat down, Millington Fire Chief Gary Graves called for other resources that finally secured the cat out of the tree.

A neighbor came with a warm blanket for the cat and kept it until the owners arrived home.
