Winter Weather Update March 6

  • There is a wind child advisory for Shelby County this morning
  • Drivers should use caution on roadways, especially on bridges and overpasses
  • Frozen slush on roadways has created black ice on the streets
  • Memphis Police and Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputies report no significant issues overnight
  • Twenty six (26) people spent the evening at the City of Memphis warming center at the Orange Mound Community Center
  • No significant power outages overnight


Snow Day 2015Shelby County Government mayor’s administration offices are open today


  • Employees that cannot come to work safely can take an annual or bonus day
  • Supervisors must be notified if employees cannot report to work


Public Works-Road Conditions


  • All roads are open
  • Salt and cinder trucks are giving priority to interstates, highways and main routes
  • Shelby County and Memphis Public Works will continue to use road graders to clear streets


Law Enforcement


  • Memphis Police continues its inclement weather policy regarding non-injury traffic crashes.  Drivers should exchange insurance information and report crashes after the weather improves.
  • The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office has returned to normal operations to investigate all traffic crashes



Memphis Area Transit Authority


  • MATA recommends bus passengers leave at least one (1) hour early for important appointments, jobs, and meetings where timeliness is crucial

Memphis International Airport is Open


  • Runway maintenance crews continue to clear ice
  • Air traffic is limited due to cancelled flights in other cities
  • Passengers should check with airlines about flight schedules

  • Check for weather-related delays


Memphis Light, Gas and Water


  • No large-scale power outages
  • Stay away from downed power lines
  • Report outages and problems to MLGW (901) 544-6500


Fire Department/Emergency Medical Services


  • Place space heaters at least three (3) feet from furniture and clothes
  • Vent generators outside, away from garages
  • Never use charcoal grills indoors


Emergency Housing


  • The City of Memphis will operate a 24-hour warming center at the Orange Mound Community Center, 2572 Park, through tomorrow morning at 7 o’clock
  • Memphis Union Mission has available beds for the homeless at 383 Poplar Avenue



Shelby County Health Department


  • Check on those who live alone, especially the elderly and disabled
  • Cold weather puts an extra strain on the heart. If you have heart disease, high blood pressure or other medical conditions, avoid shoveling snow or performing other hard work outdoors
  • If spending time outdoors, wear layers with a hat, scarf and gloves
  • Quickly change out of any wet clothing
