The Brighton Lady Cardinal Soccer program celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with green and the signing of senior standout Avis Van Kampen to Freed-Hardeman University. Also present at the signing ceremony held in the Brighton High School Gymnasium was Lions Head Coach Jason Elliott. Entering his 15th season at FHU, Elliott wanted Van Kampen in his program because of her athleticism, academics and family background. Avis’ parents Ken and Carrie were on hand for the signing along with her younger brother Jonah. Home-schooled by her mother Carrie for 12 years, Van Kampen came to Brighton in the 11th grade and decided to continue her soccer career with Shari Garrett’s Lady Cardinals. With Van Kampen emerging as a leader on and off the field, Brighton won the 2014 District 13-3A championship. Van Kampen was the leading goal scorer for the Lady Cardinals this past season. She is currently No. 9 in her class for academics. Elliott’s teams are known for achievements off the field as well. The Lions recently had four players named to the NAIA Scholar Athletes. Van Kampen said she picked FHU because of the success on the field, the high academic standards toward her major of nursing and the Christian values.
