Listening, The Lost Art

By Mike T. Smith

Open Mike for webAfter months of phone conversations I finally met a coworker face to face. I shook his hand and said, “It’s nice to finally meet you.” His response was “I’m good, how are you?”
He apparently wasn’t listening to a thing I said. Ever have one of those conversations with someone where you can tell they aren’t listening to a word you say? They are just waiting on you to shut up long enough so they can say what they want? Listening is an important, yet underutilized skill in today’s society.  All of us have five major senses; sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch. You have two eyes, two ears and one mouth. So you should listen and look twice as much as you speak.
Even though I’ve made my point I’ll go ahead and round out the senses. You have one nose, so stop and smell the roses often.  In addition to speaking that one mouth is used for eating, so don’t bite off more than you can chew.  You have ten fingers.
Don’t get crazy. Use discretion of that one. Jail is a scary place.
There was an episode of Two and a Half Men where Judith, in a moment of desperation, broke down and talked to Charlie about all of her problems. If you’ve ever watched that show you know that Judith despises Charlie. Charlie, not knowing how to react, simply said, “I understand.” She went on and on about her problems and every time she paused for Charlie’s input he would say it again, “I understand.” He didn’t know what else to say.
Despite their history she starting believing that he was the most sensitive man ever.
She started calling him about every problem she had, even dropping by his house unannounced for his thoughts about everything and the only thing
Charlie had as far as advice was, “I understand.” All Judith wanted was for somebody to listen to her. That’s all most people want when they’re going through a hard time. Just stop and listen.
So many problems can be solved just by listening to others.
