ARLINGTON — The Millington Lady Trojans were going to make the host Arlington Lady Tigers earn a District 14-3A Softball Tournament Quarterfinal victory.
Brandon Morgan’s Lady Tigers took their swings, played solid defense and used the pitching of Brianna Lewis to defeat a gamed Lady Trojans squad 12-2 Friday night on the Arlington Softball Field.
“They can hit,” Millington Head Coach Rick Hearn said. “ They’re one of the best around. They’re an experienced bunch. Jessie (Strickland) threw strikes tonight. She’s almost too around the plate.
“They kept hitting it and we had a little trouble running the ball down in the outfield tonight,” he added. “It’s good to come over in a tournament situation and see other teams play. And we’ve played a lot of ball lately, so we’re playing better. We swung the bats well tonight and got a couple of hits.”
Arlington swung the bats well early scoring five runs in the first inning. Savannah Baker started the rally with a triple. Ellie Bramlett hit a triple of her own to score Savannah.
Brianna Baker was next up to the plate smacking a single to drive in the next run. Then it was time for another triple courtesy of Taylor “T-Man” Manley drove the ball to the outfield to score another run. After sitting down the Lady Trojans 1-2-3 in the top of the first inning, it was time for Brianna Lewis to visit the plate herself. The Arlington hurler smacked a triple to drive in a pair of runs to make the score 5-0.
Manley put Arlington ahead 6-0 in the second inning and Savannah Baker make the score 7-0 with an RBI single in the third inning.
Millington finally got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning when Katie Dupree reached base with a single. Errors put the senior speedster in scoring position for Jess Trice. The sophomore slugger put the ball into play to bring Dupree home.
The Lady Tigers scored four runs in their half of the fourth to make the tally 11-1. The big blow came when Savannah Baker drove in a pair of runs with another triple.
In the fifth inning the Lady Trojans got a spark from senior catcher Ashlee Bone’s single. The next batter Ally Browning came up with a double to the opposite field scoring Bone to make the score 11-2.
Arlington finally closed out the scrappy Lady Trojans in the bottom of the fifth inning with Manley coming up clutch again. This time she hit a sacrifice fly to score the 12th run for the Lady Tigers.
Arlington advanced in the winner’s bracket to play Bartlett. Meanwhile the Lady Trojans dropped into the loser’s bracket and faced Kingsbury in the next round.
“We’ve got a game Monday we can win,” Hearn said. “Then we’ll probably battle Bolton again. They beat us bad twice. But that’s why we play it. We have to go out there and play hard.”
