Legion Fair back in Millington

Star Staff Reports

AmerLegion_color_Emblem (1)As summer turns to fall and football is back in the air, there is a long standing tradition of Memphians going to the Fair.
Bucking that tradition is the American Legion Fair which returns to Millington’s USA Stadium this weekend, May 21-24, after a four-year hiatus.  This fair is different from those large, expensive fairs which are “for-profit.”
“The American Legion Fair is an attempt to raise funds to help veterans right here in Shelby County,” said fair organizer, Lee Buchschacher of Bartlett.
“We do not have the huge advertising budgets like the Delta and Mid-South Fairs which have advertising on television at every commercial break.  But then, we don’t charge the fees they do, either.  We charge only $5 to park your car.  There is no admission fee and our wrist bands are only $20 which gives you access to 20 rides on our midway.”  Buchschacher said.
The carnival company is Crescent City Amusement of Slidell, La.
“It’s hard to get carnival companies to bring all this equipment and manpower together on spec,” Buchschacher said.
“Each one of those rides costs between $100,000 to $500,000 plus when bought new. So to have twenty of those rides for all ages gathered together is quite an investment in our community.” Buchschacher said.
The opening night of the Legion Fair is Thursday, May 21 at 6:00 p.m. which has been dubbed, “Legionnaire Night” with a special program scheduled to salute our veterans beginning at 7 p.m.
Friday night is themed, “School’s Out Party,” Saturday is “Kids Day” and Sunday is, “Family Day”
Buchschacher said, “music entertainment will be a big part of the fair with “old time rock n roll”, “classic soul” and of course where would we be without “Country”? On Saturday we’ll have a “Classic Car Show” as well as a magician.  We’re still looking for a sponsor for the petting zoo and the train ride.”
Hours of the Legion Fair are 6 to 11 p.m. weeknights; Saturday noon until midnight; and Sunday at  1-8:30 p.m.
