Hundreds of area children were running around Aycock Park in Millington Saturday with their I Go Hard-y T-shirts on.
Whether if the shirts were sponsored by the All-Pro NFL lineman Greg Hardy or the black and gold of Millington, a familiar face there over the years has been volunteer coach Dennis Alexander.
And once again Alexander was among the children teaching the fundamentals along said other 2015 I Go Hard-y Camp volunteers. Prior to him working on drills with some of the 300 children who signed up, Alexander was recognized by his former pupil Hardy and family for his years of service.
Lan Hardy, mother of Greg, said the award given to Coach Alexander was also an opportunity to remember his son Elijah who recently passed away.
“So Greg started a foundation and he named it after me so it’s the Lan Hardy Foundation,” she noted. “This year, we honor Dennis Alexander who has been out here all four years we’ve been our here helping us. We’re starting the Elijah Alexander Memorial Scholarship.
“This year our goal was one player to sponsor for SYS and pay for everything,” she continued. “Hopefully this year, Millington SYS will have more kids through.”
Hardy said her son Greg started his path to the NFL and becoming a Dallas Cowboy on the fields of Millington. During his youth, Hardy played for coaches like Alexander for the SYS Trojans.
Before heading to the NFL and starting his career with the Carolina Panthers, Hardy played at Briarcrest Christian School and then Ole Miss. While playing in the Southeastern Conference, Greg’s younger siblings Selina and Jacoby were participating in Millington SYS.
Lan said with SYS gave her children so much and her family feels it is important to give back in different way including the Elijah Alexander Memorial Scholarship.
“We told him to choose somebody who embodies Elijah good heart and warm spirit,” she noted. “We wanted to do something for Coach Dennis to show the community how much he and his family meant to us.
“Elijah played when Selina was cheering,” Lan concluded. “So Selina cheered for him. He’s (Dennis) always been there. We couldn’t do this without him. We wanted him to know how much Elijah meant to us and what he means to us.”
