MEMPHIS — Last week Team Penny captured its second straight AAU National title.
The 2015 victory came on the campus of Southwind High School by the Team Penny 15s. Team Penny beat the Michigan Gators 86-66 featuring Brighton Cardinal standout, incoming sophomore Taelyr Gatlin.
Gatlin played along side area standouts like TJ Moss, Alex Lomax and Chandler Lawson. Moss led Team Penny in the national championship game with 22 points. Lomax added 19 points and Lawson tallied 13 points.
The Gators limited Team Penny in the first quarter taking an 22-20 lead. Michigan came out hot hitting five long range shots in the opening quarter.
Team Penny coach LaMarcus Golden calmed his players down and switched defenses to neutralize the Gators. Team Penny outscored Michigan by 10 points in the second quarter.
Team Penny’s halftime lead was 46-38. The group from the Memphis area continued to outplay Michigan tallying 40 more points and holding the Gators to 28 in the second half.
